Hoag becomes first California hospital to use light-based imaging technology for vascular surgery

Hoag hospital in Newport Beach, California, has become the first in the state to implement Philips LumiGuide technology for endovascular surgery. The technology uses light-based imaging instead of X-rays to visualise devices inside the body, reducing radiation exposure for patients whilst providing surgeons with greater precision during minimally invasive procedures. The enhanced visuals allow physicians to navigate more efficiently, resulting in shorter procedure times. Hoag currently uses LumiGuide technology for complex aortic aneurysm repairs, with future applications anticipated across other advanced vascular procedures. Dr Antonio Covarrubias, Division Chief of Vascular Surgery at Hoag, described the milestone as a symbol of the hospital's commitment to innovation that helps better serve the Orange County community.

Liquid biopsy is an emerging method of collecting and analyzing biomarkers through a simple blood test instead of an invasive surgical biopsy, and the information can be used for more reliable diagnosis and to plan treatment options. For GBM or brain tumor, however, biomarkers are not released into the blood stream because of the BBB. Opening the BBB using FUS may provide a safer and non-invasive approach to brain tumor liquid biopsies. Hoag Family Cancer Institute is one of only 17 sites throughout the U.S
