Responsibilities
  • Adjust and manage claims brought against security companies, private investigators, and alarm installation and monitoring companies from receipt of claim or suit through resolution or trial or appeal.
  • Contact the insured early to identify witnesses, employees, contracts, and other relevant documents and obtain the insured's knowledge of the allegations in the claim or suit.
  • Analyze coverage for application to the claim and prepare coverage position letters, including reservations of rights, disclaimers, tenders to other parties, and acceptance of tenders to the insured where appropriate.
  • Confer with internal and external coverage counsel as necessary to clarify coverage positions and coverage litigation.
  • Communicate with underwriting regarding the insured's risk potential and clarification of policy-language intent.
  • Maintain diaries for file tasks, settlement conferences, mediations, and trials.
  • Oversee defense counsel from initial assignment throughout litigation to ensure timely reporting, confirmation of defense strategy, and analysis of new developments.
  • Collaborate with defense counsel to develop early litigation or settlement strategy and ensure timely pretrial reports.
  • Maintain claim files, notes, and documentation in compliance with internal guidelines and external regulations, including analysis of liability, damages, reserve adequacy, and next steps.
  • Prepare internal reports documenting files and identifying significant reserve increases for management and upper-management review.
  • Communicate critical new developments and significant reserve-increase recommendations to the manager, as well as potential settlement recommendations above the handler's settlement authority.
  • Communicate critical or new developments to exterior carriers, including coverage, litigation developments, reserves, and potential settlement opportunities.
  • Review and approve litigation budgets submitted by defense counsel.
  • Regularly review and update open but inactive claim files and evaluate inactive claims for closure and removal of reserves.
  • Attend mediation and settlement conferences when required to facilitate and negotiate settlements.
  • Monitor and approve or reject litigation expenses recommended by defense counsel.
  • Prepare settlement drafts and review releases for accuracy.
  • Travel occasionally for matters that cannot be handled through video conference.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of first-party commercial auto claims handling is preferred.
  • Three or more years of claims experience is preferred.
  • A law degree is a plus.

Jeff Consolino named Core Specialty chairman as Ed Noonan steps down after six years

Core Specialty Insurance Holdings has announced changes to its Board of Directors. Ed Noonan has stepped down as Executive Chairman after serving since the company's 2020 recapitalisation. Jeff Consolino, the company's founder, president and CEO, has assumed the role of Executive Chairman effective immediately. The company has also appointed Bart van der Vlugt to its Board of Directors. Van der Vlugt is a principal at Sixth Street, which he joined in 2021, where he focuses on insurance sector investments including Sixth Street's partnership with Enstar Group Limited. Enstar, backed by Sixth Street-managed investment vehicles, provided Core Specialty with insurance companies and reinsurance agreements at the company's formation in 2020.
