Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent education is preferred, including a GED, homeschool equivalency, or partial or full completion of post-secondary education.
  • One year of customer service experience is preferred.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English is required to perform essential job functions, especially those affecting patient or employee safety and security.
  • Basic computer knowledge is required.
  • Working knowledge of universal precautions, isolation, infection control, and safety procedures is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers in a customer-service-focused manner is required.
  • Ability to build and sustain interpersonal relationships is required.
Responsibilities
  • Transport medications, laboratory specimens, medical records, patient belongings, and other items throughout the Houston Methodist complex on a 24-hour basis.
  • Sort, organize, and transport specimens and medications between pharmacy and laboratory locations, nursing units, and physician offices.
  • Complete deliveries and pick-ups accurately, efficiently, and within established time standards.
  • Operate the pneumatic tube system to send medications and separate medications and specimens that cannot be transported through it.
  • Document laboratory and pharmacy trips accurately on courier log sheets.
  • Maintain patient-information confidentiality during deliveries in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
  • Follow safety rules, report accidents, correct minor safety hazards, and safely handle cytotoxic and biohazardous materials.
  • Use a handheld radio to call laboratory and pharmacy trips to dispatch and follow radio etiquette.
  • Scan medications using computers and handheld scanners before delivery.
  • Manage time, prioritize daily tasks, meet attendance and labor-productivity standards, and minimize incidental overtime.
  • Participate in performance-improvement projects and activities and maintain organizational skills while completing assigned tasks.
  • Complete and update the My Development plan and participate in career discussions with management.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, nurses, physicians, visitors, and coworkers, including addressing specimen and medication delivery or pickup issues.
  • Make customer-service decisions involving problem-solving, trip delays, cancellations, and recalled assignments.
