Requirements
  • No prior experience is necessary.
  • A high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is preferred.
  • Must be able to proficiently use a computer, the Internet, and basic office equipment.
  • Must successfully complete a state-approved Nursing Assistant program and obtain and maintain mandatory state and federal requirements and certifications for the occupation.
  • Must be able to assist patients during therapy.
  • Employees in special care or dementia care must complete additional training in caring for and treating residents with dementia.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with residents and nursing staff and have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to read, write, understand, and speak English.
  • Must be able to use a computer for charting.
  • Must be able to operate a Sit to Stand device, Hoyer lift, gait belts, and tub chairs.
  • Must participate in continuing education.
  • Must adhere to all terms and conditions in the United Church Homes Employee Handbook.
Responsibilities
  • Receive and participate in nursing report at the start of the shift.
  • Assist residents at mealtimes, including positioning residents for meals, serving food, assisting with feeding, ensuring hydration, and delivering and documenting snacks and supplements.
  • Assist with resident care, including bathing, grooming, hygiene, and placement of adaptive equipment.
  • Explain procedures to residents before administering them and drape residents for examinations and treatments.
  • Keep residents dry by changing clothing and linens when wet or soiled.
  • Assist residents with bowel and bladder functions.
  • Empty urinary drainage bags, record output, and report irregularities to a nurse.
  • Lift, position, and transport residents using beds, chairs, bathtubs, wheelchairs, and lifts while following resident safety needs; assist residents with ambulation, with or without self-help devices, as instructed.
  • Perform restorative and rehabilitative procedures as instructed.
  • Keep call lights within residents' reach and respond promptly.
  • Ensure residents' personal care needs are met in accordance with their wishes.
  • Report changes in residents' conditions to a supervisor as soon as practical.
  • Change bed linens and keep them wrinkle-free; handle linens according to infection-control guidelines.
  • Maintain cleanliness of resident units, bathing areas, treatment and supply rooms, workrooms, and linen closets.
  • Assist residents with preparation for and transportation to appointments, activities, and social programs.
  • Use creative problem solving to meet residents' needs within the scope of responsibility.
  • Provide post-mortem care as instructed.
  • Perform required special nursing care duties, including identifying and reporting abnormal skin conditions.
  • Accurately complete flow sheets, intake and output records, and other required documents at the point of care.
  • Participate in care conferences as indicated and follow individual resident care plans.
  • Perform required admission, discharge, and transfer duties.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of necessary information.
  • Use supplies and equipment properly and without waste, including restocking supplies.
  • Report structural, equipment, and furniture defects and malfunctions to appropriate personnel.
  • Handle unusual occurrences calmly and logically to maintain continuity of duties.
  • Communicate effectively with residents and their families or other significant relationships, and ensure departmental staff do the same.
  • Follow applicable safety and security guidelines, care procedures, and protocols for residents in the Dementia Care Unit.
  • Participate in relevant educational and training activities as appropriate.
  • Participate in special activities as necessary, such as safety committees and mentoring, orientation, or training of new hires.
  • Label and charge ancillary items for resident billing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
