Requirements
  • Proven experience in social media and digital journalism.
  • A consistent record running social media accounts for major media outlets.
  • Strong editorial judgment and the ability to experiment with and refine strategies to optimize article sharing for different social audiences.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with knowledge of Times style or the ability to absorb and apply it quickly.
  • Strong analytical skills and familiarity with using data to inform editorial decisions.
  • A passion for news and dedication to The Times and its journalistic mission.
Responsibilities
  • Lead The Times’s social presence across its main accounts, ensuring coverage of breaking news and live events, conceiving and executing social plans for enterprise projects, and using video, photography, and graphics to elevate off-platform reporting.
  • Support increased video production across the newsroom by prioritizing time-sensitive projects and ensuring video journalism reaches a wide audience off-platform.
  • Develop and refine The Times’s voice across off-platform channels using sound news judgment and audience-sensitive framing.
  • Collaborate with Social Visuals editors and the Video team, especially the video audience editor in London, to develop and execute visual storytelling formats and strategies for social platforms.
  • Build creative social-native content such as visual cards and Instagram Stories.
  • Edit, shape, and elevate headlines, copy, and visual assets for social media.
  • Suggest story ideas, identify video opportunities, and partner with desks across the London newsroom to produce stories that anticipate and respond to readers’ social and search needs.
  • Develop testing strategies for media and messaging to inform continuously updated best practices for engaging off-platform audiences.
  • Partner with newsroom editors to workshop on-platform article framing using off-platform performance insights and reader interest.
  • Interpret data and signals to determine which pieces fit particular audiences on and off the platforms.
  • Track success through engagement rates, growth statistics, reader responses, and other metrics, especially for video.
  • Work with newsroom journalists on social media best practices, including framing pieces for specific audiences.
  • Collaborate with audience editors in London and around the world to flag coverage opportunities informed by off-platform trends and share performance insights and case studies with desks.
  • Support and understand the value of journalistic independence and demonstrate commitment to The Times’s mission.
