Requirements
  • Minimum education is vocational training, an apprenticeship, or equivalent experience in a related field; a four-year degree is not typically required.
  • Two to five years of work experience in a related job discipline is required.

  • Ability to serve patrons and enforce library policies with clarity, consistency, patience, and empathy.
  • Ability to manage staff and projects in alignment with departmental priorities.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in spoken and written communication.
  • Availability to work late evenings and weekends, with occasional schedule flexibility during changes in Library hours and periods of staff shortages or absences.
  • Ability to work independently as the sole supervisor in a large academic library.
  • Ability to carry or lift loads of up to 50 pounds, push and pull loaded book trucks, and shelve and retrieve materials at varying heights.
  • Ability to sit and use a computer for extended periods, stand for up to four hours, perform repetitive wrist, hand, and finger movements, and visually and audibly engage with print and electronic materials for extended periods.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise clerical staff and serve as the supervisor in charge of the Regenstein Library, overseeing building security and resolving problems and appeals related to entry policies.
  • Execute opening or closing procedures, promptly report building issues to Library and University Facilities Services, and provide an initial response to emergencies.
  • Enforce policies that support a scholarly environment; resolve patron issues professionally and tactfully, refer concerns to appropriate campus entities when needed, and document and report incidents.
  • Troubleshoot library technology, including public access workstations, micro-media readers, compact shelving, printers, and audiovisual equipment.
  • Answer patron questions about access services, overdue books, recalls, reserve problems, and fines in person, by phone, and through the online ticketing system; collect fines and fees.
  • Route questions to appropriate resources when outside the supervisor’s expertise, responsibility, or knowledge, and document and update departmental procedures.
  • Manage daily circulation workflow, including lending materials awaiting pickup, course reserves, and general collections.
  • Provide supervisory coverage for Mansueto Circulation as needed due to staffing absences or vacancies.
  • Train, supervise, and help track attendance and performance of approximately 20 part-time student counter attendants; coach and direct them in maintaining circulation policies and customer service standards.
  • Answer patron questions related to Access Services and serve as a resource for other Library service inquiries.
  • Distribute work to student counter attendants and monitor their work; troubleshoot equipment as needed.
  • Perform other related work as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • A college degree.
  • Experience in a library or related environment.
  • Previous experience directing or supervising the work of others.
  • Significant customer service experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, email, and internet work applications.
