Requirements
  • An Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology is required.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification or equivalent is required; if not certified, certification must be obtained within the first year of employment.
  • For the MLT I level, no clinical experience is required.
  • The employee must complete positive patient identification using two identifiers, evaluate specimen acceptability, and follow correct labeling practices.
  • The employee must be proficient in the electronic laboratory computer system and departmental middleware systems.
  • The employee must complete required quality control, competency, procedure, policy, instrument maintenance, and documentation activities according to established procedures and deadlines.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare, receive, accession, process, and test patient specimens while maintaining supplies and stock for laboratory testing.
  • Perform routine laboratory testing using automated and non-automated methods according to established procedures.
  • Recognize normal and abnormal laboratory values and complete warranted notifications.
  • Recognize computer data problems and troubleshoot laboratory instruments, equipment, and test results.
  • Communicate technical testing information to medical and lay persons.
  • Perform specimen processing, testing, and interpretation based on sample type and test.
  • Create and review test and specimen pending worklists and document critical test results using established policies.
  • Quality-control new reagent lots and shipments, order reagents at designated par levels, and support test and instrument validation activities.
  • Perform and document quality control testing and instrument maintenance, verify quality control before reporting patient results, and document equipment problems and resolutions.
  • Perform process improvement activities and follow approved procedures and policies.
  • Complete procedure and policy sign-offs and competency documentation using MediaLab.
  • Assist with the orientation and training of new staff, students, and residents and provide timely documentation or feedback.
  • Participate in continuing education and model Standards of Behavior in daily interactions.
  • Complete additional tasks assigned by the Director, Manager, Coordinator, or Team Leader in a timely manner.
