12/12/2025 This Week in Cannabis: A Tropicanna Weekly Wrap-Up Issue #7 AI is transforming how cannabis strains are designed. A new study highlighted by Marijuana Moment shows how artificial intelligence may soon help breeders design cannabis strains before a single seed is planted. By feeding genetic markers, chemical profiles, environmental data, and historical crop performance into machine-learning models, AI can forecast potential traits including cannabinoid balance, terpene output, growth behavior, and resilience. Instead of replacing cultivators, the technology acts as an advanced tool: helping shorten breeding cycles, support consistency in larger grows, and explore new combinations that would've taken years to test through traditional methods. As California's market continues to evolve, breakthroughs like this could lead to faster innovation, more precise effects, and better-curated products reaching consumers. This is one of the most forward-looking cannabis research stories of the year, and a clear sign of where cultivation science is heading. Industry news: STIIIZY expands its retail footprint in California. California saw another significant shift this week in its retail landscape. STIIIZY acquired 12 former Gold Flora dispensaries through a court-approved bankruptcy auction, expanding its presence to more than 60 retail locations across the state. This move underscores ongoing consolidation within the regulated market, but also reflects confidence from major operators who continue investing in California despite competitive headwinds. For consumers, it signals a future where larger retailers are prioritizing scale, consistency, and accessibility while the market continues to mature. Celebrity & culture: Jim Belushi tours the east Coast with High Grass Farms. Actor and cannabis cultivator Jim Belushi made headlines this week as he traveled across New Jersey promoting a new production partnership with High Grass Farms. Belushi hosted appearances at several dispensaries, including ReLeaf, High Rollers, The Frosted Nug, and Jersey Joint, introducing consumers to offerings from his three cannabis lines: Belushi's Farm, The Blues Brothers, and Big Sur Holy Weed. During the tour, he spotlighted cultivars like Pink Certz, Mule Fuel, and Apple Tart, along with vapes, concentrates, and brick hash. His stops focused on quality, cultivation practices, and expanding brand presence in emerging markets. It's another example of how celebrity growers are deepening their hands-on involvement, from genetics to retail activation across the national landscape. Tropicanna update: ballin' on a Budget. If you love concentrates, this is your week to stop by. Its "Ballin' on a Budget" section is now stocked with a lineup of hash and rosin products at 30%, 40%, and even 50% off, available both in-store and online. These deals include a mix of solventless rosin, traditional hash, and specialty concentrate offerings, making it easier than ever to pick up premium extracts without premium pricing. Whether you're exploring hash for the first time or looking to refill your dab bar with something high-quality, these savings are live while supplies last. Fresh drop: West Coast Cure x LRG collaboration arrives Friday (dec 12). Beginning Friday, December 12th, Tropicanna will have a limited and exclusive drop from West Coast Cure in partnership with iconic streetwear brand LRG. Each unit comes with a special LRG "Dead Serious" hoodie, making this both a fire flower pick and a streetwear collectible. Quantities are extremely limited. This is a true one-time drop, and is available exclusively in-store. Once it's gone, it's gone. Local OC events: holiday festivities around the County. Here are some festive Orange County events happening this weekend and through the holidays: A waterfront holiday celebration featuring a tree lighting ceremony and Santa's Trolley traveling through Lantern District with live entertainment. Local ceramic artists gather for a seasonal marketplace offering handmade gifts, pottery, and holiday crafts. A glowing nighttime holiday installation featuring lights, live music, and community festivities across the Great Park lawn. A coastal holiday event with live performances, market vendors, kids' activities, and visits from Santa. A mobile Santa parade traveling through neighborhoods, spreading cheer and holiday music. A lively seasonal event featuring themed décor, local vendors, entertainment, and family-friendly activities. A full immersive holiday light show and festival experience right here in Santa Ana - perfect for families looking to kick off the season. Weekend sign-off. This week's mix of breakthroughs, brand updates, and festive happenings reminds Thetropicannalife how quickly the cannabis world and its local community evolve during the holidays. Whether you're exploring something new on its shelves or heading out to enjoy an OC winter event, Thetropicannalife is grateful to be part of your season. Have a great weekend, and thanks, as always, for choosing Tropicanna.

Stiiizy acquires 12 California cannabis stores for $25M from defunct Gold Flora

Stiiizy has acquired 12 California cannabis stores from the now-defunct cannabis conglomerate Gold Flora for $25 million, expanding its retail footprint in the state. The deal marks a significant consolidation move in California's competitive cannabis market as larger operators absorb smaller competitors struggling in the challenging regulatory environment.

Stiiizy eats retail competitor with $25M purchase of 12 California cannabis stores

Stiiizy eats retail competitor with $25M purchase of 12 California cannabis stores. California's largest retail cannabis chain just got a lot bigger, all thanks to the downfall of another giant corporation in the legal marijuana industry. Stiiizy purchased 12 retail stores from the corporate dregs of Gold Flora, a now-collapsed cannabis conglomerate that at one time was a major player in the state's legal industry. Stiiizy bought the previous leases and licenses with a $25 million auction bid on Oct. 23, according to a court order filed in Los Angeles Superior Court. The company officially gained control of the stores on Monday, according to Stiiizy President Tak Sato. "Stiiizy took over 12 Gold Flora stores today. That will give us 58 in California and a total of 61 if you include our 3 stores in Michigan," Sato said in an emailed statement to SFGATE. Stiiizy's meteoric growth in California has turned it into a dominant force in American cannabis. The brand is a favorite in young, urban cannabis culture, with its budget-friendly products, especially its marijuana vapes, topping sales charts for years. Stiiizy's rise has also come with persistent controversy, as the brand has been accused of selling cannabis tainted with illegal pesticides and some of its executives have been accused of running vast networks of illegal sales and stores, allegations that Stiiizy has denied. The $25 million purchase of Gold Flora is a major bet that they can make money where other companies have failed and on the future of California's legal cannabis market, which has seen overall sales contract for years. In fact, the retail giant is growing exactly because of those struggles. Gold Flora was a conglomerate that combined multiple cannabis companies into one juggernaut, including a highly publicized pot startup linked to Jay-Z called the Parent Company, which blew $575 million in cash before being taken over by Gold Flora. But the conglomerate ultimately failed in March after it faced mounting debts and lingering lawsuits from the Jay-Z-linked company among others. Don't let google decide who you trust. Make SFGATE a preferred source so your search results prioritize writing by actual people, not AI. Stiiizy's purchase of Gold Flora's stores has come with some controversy. During an auction on Oct. 23, Stiiizy placed the highest bid of $26.45 million, according to a court filing. But that bid cost was later reduced by $1.4 million after Stiiizy discovered that retail licenses in San Jose, Costa Mesa and Santa Barbara would not be able to transfer to a new owner, a filing said. A competitor, Sweet Leaf, said in a court filing that its bid of $26.3 million should be considered the new highest bidder after the post-auction reductions on Stiiizy's purchase price because the company should have known the licenses were at risk of not transferring. "Stiiizy (like any other qualified bidder) had months to conduct due diligence and knew that the sale was on "AS IS" terms, and so it should have factored such risks into its bid," attorneys for Sweet Leaf said in their petition to make the company the new highest bidder. A judge in Los Angeles County rejected Sweet Leaf's attempt to stop the sale, according to a court filing, allowing Stiiizy to officially purchase and take over the assets. Stiiizy already had more retail locations than any other company in California, but Monday's purchase will make its position even more dominant. The next closest retail chain is Catalyst cannabis, with 33 locations listed on its website.
