  • At least four years of relevant experience.
  • An approved Medical Assistant certification: Certified Medical Assistant from the American Association of Medical Assistants, Registered Medical Assistant from American Medical Technologists, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant from the National Healthcare Association, National Certified Medical Assistant from the National Healthcare Association or National Center for Competency Testing, or Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant from the National Association for Health Professionals.
  • Active American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification for healthcare providers.
  • Florida HIV/AIDS Healthcare Professional Continuing Education certification.
  • Ability to perform within the clinical scope of practice while complying with applicable state, federal, and University of Miami standards, rules, regulations, and policies.
Responsibilities
  • Assist medical providers with patient healthcare management and clinical procedures under the supervision of a licensed physician.
  • Provide hands-on patient care in accordance with evidence-based quality, safety, service, regulatory, and institutional standards.
  • Support patients’ individual needs, establish therapeutic relationships, manage discomfort, and provide emotional support to patients and families.
  • Prioritize and complete multiple clinical and administrative tasks safely, professionally, and on time; communicate with patients, families, and team members.
  • Participate in unit or clinic programs and meetings and use available technology for communication, documentation, and clinical information retrieval.
  • Maintain current clinical competencies and professional knowledge for the assigned patient population.
  • Ensure compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act requirements and protect patient privacy.
  • Assist providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment and examination rooms, supplies, instruments, and materials.
  • Prepare patients for physician care by providing basic instructions and information about examination procedures.
  • Perform vital signs, electrocardiograms, and phlebotomy, and document results in the medical record.
  • Clean and sterilize medical instruments using sterile technique.
  • Schedule patients for tests and complete laboratory-work forms.
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient records and documentation.
  • Order, stock, and inventory medical supplies and perform clerical duties.
  • Maintain a weekly log of University of Miami Health System medical assistants’ assignments and a daily checklist of fully stocked orthopedic examination rooms.
  • Provide the senior practice manager with a weekly staff calendar to ensure sufficient unit coverage.
  • Order and maintain sufficient stock of orthopedic medications, including lidocaine, Synvisc, Monovisc, platelet-rich plasma, Celestone, dexamethasone, bupivacaine, and Kenalog.
  • Maintain an accurate durable medical equipment inventory log for the orthopedic unit.
  • Enter radiology X-ray charges.
  • Order medical supplies from different vendors in Workday.
  • Transport used orthopedic tools to the operating room for sterilization by the central sterilization team.
  • Learn to schedule and view appointments in UChart and confirm patient appointments.
  • Train newly hired medical assistants in the orthopedic department.
  • Obtain physician sign-off on competency completion jointly with the nurse or unit designee.
