About the Job

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related field must have been conferred within three years before the appointment start date.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and modern machine learning and agentic artificial intelligence frameworks is required.
  • Experience with control, optimization, or reinforcement learning, or with workflow automation or multi-agent systems, is required.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting independent research in a relevant area of materials science or engineering is required.
  • A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals or conferences is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • The candidate must be able to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary research environment and be comfortable working with real-world experimental environments, including uncertainty, noise, and incomplete data.
  • The candidate must be committed to mentoring and contributing to the academic development of graduate and undergraduate students.
  • The candidate must present acceptable original documents proving identity and authorization to work in the United States by the third day of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop agentic artificial intelligence models and agentic orchestration frameworks for multi-step, multi-instrument experimental workflows, such as observe-reason-plan-act workflows, and design closed-loop optimization and active learning strategies for real-time experiment steering and adaptive decision-making.
  • Integrate agentic artificial intelligence systems with instrument control application programming interfaces, laboratory scheduling systems, and data acquisition interfaces to enable autonomous operation across diverse scientific instruments.
  • Build and refine digital twins for synthesis and characterization workflows using physics-based simulations and/or surrogate machine learning models.
  • Collaborate with experimentalists, theorists, and engineers across academic and industrial partners, including postdoctoral fellows in liquid-phase synthesis, microdroplet printing, and characterization.
  • Publish research, present findings at international conferences, and contribute to proposal development for initiatives in agentic artificial intelligence and autonomous laboratory systems.
  • Mentor graduate students and research staff and foster interdisciplinary collaboration between materials science, data science, and robotics.
  • Collaborate with the Texas Materials Institute instrumentation and artificial intelligence engineering teams to help define the architecture for next-generation autonomous materials research laboratories at the University of Texas at Austin.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
