About the company

Western Digital, which goes by WD, designs and makes hard disk drives, mostly the high-capacity models that cloud and AI data centers use to store huge amounts of data cheaply. In 2013, its HGST unit shipped the first helium-filled hard drives, which fit more disks into each drive and use less power. Its drives store data on stacks of spinning magnetic disks, and the lineup runs from Ultrastar data center drives to WD Red and WD Purple drives for home servers and security cameras. WD makes its money selling these drives to cloud companies, PC makers, and retail shoppers. Western Digital was founded in 1970 and is based in San Jose, California, and in 2025 it spun off its flash memory business as Sandisk.

What believers are saying

  • Sales are accelerating: revenue rose 44% in the quarter ended July 2026, and WD forecast up to 49% growth next.
  • Demand is locked in: in January 2026, WD said 2026 was nearly sold out, with contracts into 2028.
  • Room to grow: WD listed 346 open roles in October 2026, including 31 internships and 92 US jobs.

What critics are saying

  • A few buyers drive the business: three customers made 44% of fiscal 2026 revenue; the top 10, 73%.
  • WD trails on denser drives: Seagate's 44TB laser-heated drives reached two cloud giants by March 2026; WD's come in 2027.
  • Job cuts continue despite growth: WD booked $103 million in severance costs in the nine months to April 2026.

What makes Western Digital unique

  • It sells mostly to data centers, not shoppers: cloud customers made 89% of revenue in mid-2026, consumers 5%.
  • Most staff work in Asia: 88% of WD's roughly 40,000 employees are in Asia Pacific, where it builds its drives.
  • It stretches older drive technology further: by July 2026, WD was shipping 40TB drives without Seagate-style laser heating.

Western Digital stock could hit $500 by 2030, but a return to its $746 peak looks unlikely

Western Digital's shares could reach about $500 by 2030, according to a Motley Fool analyst, implying returns of roughly 8% a year. The stock trades near $366, down about 51% from its June 18 record close of about $746. The estimate multiplies projected fiscal 2030 adjusted earnings per share of about $33.50 by a price-to-earnings ratio of 15. In its fiscal first quarter, ended October 2, 2026, revenue rose 55% to $4.38 billion. Adjusted earnings per share reached $4.64, and average price per terabyte climbed 28%. Management guides to $5.80 in adjusted earnings per share next quarter. The chief financial officer said prices could keep rising for three or four more quarters before slowing.

Microsoft, Western Digital and Lam Research top quality stock picks as AI capex hits $828B

AI heavyweights are spending an estimated $828 billion on chips, data centres and related infrastructure this year. Simply Wall St says investors may favour firms with high return on equity and solid balance sheets as that spending draws scrutiny. Its quality screen highlights three stocks: Microsoft, Western Digital and Lam Research. Microsoft spent $37.5 billion on capital expenditure last quarter, funded by its cloud business. Western Digital, now focused on high-capacity hard drives, has a market value of about $148 billion. Its hard disk drive segment brings in about $14.5 billion in revenue. Lam Research has a market value of roughly $317.8 billion. Its wafer-processing equipment and services generate about $26.1 billion in revenue. Western Digital stock up 217% in a year, but cloud demand must keep growing for a rebound

Western Digital shares returned 217.1% in the year to October 29, 2026, against 13.3% for the S&P 500. They have fallen 27.4% since July 31. Cloud customers drive the company's growth. They made up 88% of fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenue, which rose 54% from a year earlier on demand for high-capacity hard disks. Western Digital shipped 22% more exabytes of storage in the quarter, and its average price per terabyte rose 28%. It expects to ship HAMR products in volume in the first half of calendar 2027 and sees room to raise prices further. A Trefis scenario that caps revenue growth at 30% a year puts revenue at $31.8 billion in three years, up from $14.5 billion. That would lift the shares about 44.9%. The next report, due in January 2027, will show whether cloud growth holds.

Western Digital stock falls over 50% from $800 peak despite 55% revenue jump to $4.4B

Western Digital's stock has fallen more than 50% from its June high of just under $800 and now struggles to stay above $400. Investors have soured on memory and storage stocks, though Western Digital has fallen harder than peers such as Micron Technology. On October 22, the company reported first-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue of $4.4 billion, up 55% year on year. Operating income rose 158% to more than $2 billion, driven by AI-related demand for storage. It also raised its dividend by 17%, though the yield is just 0.2%. Over three months the stock has dropped 26%, while the State Street Technology Select Sector SDPR ETF rose 7%. Investors may fear more competition and slower AI spending. Even with a price-to-earnings multiple of 13, the author sees no compelling buy given volatile earnings and an uncertain outlook.

Western Digital Corporation reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenue of $4,381 million for the period ended October 2, 2026, up 55% from $2,818 million a year earlier and up 17% from the prior quarter's $3,747 million, according to the company's earnings release. The board also raised the quarterly cash dividend 17% to $0.175 per share, payable December 17, 2026 to shareholders of record as of December 4, 2026. Western Digital guided for second-quarter revenue of approximately $5.1 billion, continuing the sequential growth trend disclosed in the release. Margins widened alongside the revenue gain. The company's non-GAAP gross margin expanded to 58.1% and its non-GAAP operating margin to 49.1%, which Western Digital said drove a 161% year-over-year increase in non-GAAP earnings per share. On a GAAP basis, operating income rose 158% year over year to $2,046 million, up from $792 million a year earlier and 31% higher than the prior quarter's $1,563 million. GAAP operating margin reached 46.7%, an increase of 1,860 basis points from a year ago and 500 basis points sequentially. Western Digital provides forward guidance only on a non-GAAP basis. The company said in its release that certain information needed to reconcile that guidance to GAAP figures is difficult to estimate or quantify with certainty given its dependence on future events outside the company's control. Management commentary on demand and pricing. CEO Irving Tan said fiscal 2027 is "off to a strong start, with results exceeding expectations, driven by robust customer demand and disciplined execution." He added that as the company deepens "our customer relationships, broaden[s] the customer base to new areas of the market, and extend[s] our visibility into future demand, we are building an increasingly durable foundation for long-term value creation." CFO Kris Sennesael attributed the quarter's results to "robust exabyte growth and improved pricing," calling it "another quarter of strong financial performance." That is the only pricing commentary included in the release, and the company did not break out how much of its revenue growth, or its guidance for the coming quarter, stems from higher prices versus higher shipped capacity. Readers should treat the exabyte-growth-and-pricing framing as a general description of demand rather than a quantified split between volume and price. What the release does and does not disclose. Western Digital describes itself as building storage infrastructure for what it calls the AI-driven data economy, saying it partners with major hyperscalers, cloud service providers and enterprises. The company's risk-factor disclosures reference the concentration of its revenue in the Cloud end market and among top customers, its dependence on a limited number of qualified suppliers, and the potential impact of long-term agreements. However, the release itself does not disclose the terms, existence or scale of any specific long-term supply agreements or customer prepayments tied to the quarter's results, so those risk-factor references should not be read as confirmation that such arrangements are currently in place at a material level. The release likewise does not include capital expenditure figures or multi-year spending plans, nor does it address share-price reaction, analyst rating changes or price-target revisions. Those items fall outside the company's own disclosure and are not addressed here. A look at the dividend math. Based on the company's stated 17% dividend increase to $0.175 per share, the prior quarterly dividend appears to have been approximately $0.15 per share ($0.175 divided by 1.17, which equals roughly $0.1496). This is its calculation derived from the figures Western Digital disclosed, not a separately stated figure in the release. Bottom line. Western Digital's fiscal first-quarter results show a company posting rapid year-over-year revenue growth alongside expanding margins, a sequential increase in guidance to roughly $5.1 billion, and a meaningfully higher dividend. Management credited exabyte growth and improved pricing without quantifying either factor's contribution, and the release left unaddressed several details, including capital spending plans, specific customer supply arrangements, and the market's trading reaction, that would be needed to form a fuller picture of the company's near-term trajectory.
