Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent and demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
  • 0–2 years of experience in machine trades; minimally experienced applicants with an ability and desire to learn will be considered.
  • Ability to select proper tooling, speeds, and feeds for complex, tight-tolerance components.
  • Knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, plastics, wood, and epoxy resins.
  • Proficiency with basic and advanced inspection equipment, including calipers, micrometers, and dial indicators.
  • Ability to program, operate, and maintain CNC lathes and machining centers.
  • Knowledge of G code, conversational programming, CAD, and Mastercam.
  • Ability to use welding and cutting equipment, including MIG, TIG, and stick welding, plasma cutting, and oxy-acetylene cutting.
  • Familiarity with basic electrical power and industrial controls for maintenance and prototype applications.
  • Ability to read and interpret prints; proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and other relevant applications.
  • Ability to lift and position fixtures and tooling weighing 50 pounds.
  • Ability to comply with applicable health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate standard metalworking machine tools, hand power tools, and hand tools to make and install mechanical parts or assemblies.
  • Work independently and exercise judgment in complex setups and operations.
  • Complete machining assignments without direct day-to-day supervision.
  • Develop, construct, and repair experimental and scientific equipment with appropriate precision.
  • Translate ideas from scientists, engineers, and students into informally designed working models.
  • Teach students the proper operation of machine tools.
  • Develop and produce fixtures to provide a stable platform for machining operations.
  • Finish materials to required micro-tolerances.
  • Work with university faculty, staff, and students to fabricate unique parts and equipment.
  • Recommend material and design changes when appropriate.
  • Design and construct machinery, tooling, special fixtures, and prints using verbal orders, sketches, blueprints, and CAD models.
  • Review CAD models and provide design-for-manufacturing advice on materials, tolerances, features, and mechanism design.
  • Provide instruction and training to students and associates on safe, basic-level machining equipment operation.
  • Instruct short introductory classes in machine tool operation and/or welding.
  • Maintain excellent housekeeping practices within the workspace.
  • Comply with applicable health and safety programs and reinforce continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors and perform other related duties as requested.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate degree in a related field with a journeyman certificate in machine trades.
  • 5 or more years of experience in machine trades.
