Serving Heroes event honors Pittsburgh first responders.

Serving Heroes event honors Pittsburgh first responders. * mike ruzzi * aug 31, 2026 updated 3 hrs ago. The Gary Sinise Foundation (GSF), Sunbelt Rentals, and MLB All-Star Paul Skenes came together today to honor and support Pittsburgh-area first responders through the Foundation's Serving Heroes program. The event provided an opportunity to connect with and express gratitude to the men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting local communities. As part of the event, Sunbelt Rentals, Skenes, and GSF presented a $41,266 equipment grant to the Berkeley Hills Fire Company. The funding supported the purchase of two battery-operated hydraulic rescue tools, complete with forcible entry tips and spare batteries. The investment was especially meaningful for Berkeley Hills Fire Company, a 100% volunteer department that responded to thousands of incidents each year. The grant presentation took place as the nation prepared to commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. The anniversary served as a reminder of a pivotal moment that inspired actor and humanitarian Gary Sinise to significantly expand his commitment to supporting first responders nationwide and servicemembers around the world. The Gary Sinise Foundation also prioritized 9/11 education initiatives that connected first responders and military service members who experienced the events of September 11 with younger generations born afterward. Sunbelt Rentals has partnered with the Gary Sinise Foundation for more than a decade, providing ongoing support for programs benefiting military servicemembers, veterans, first responders, and their families. Skenes also brought a personal connection to the initiative through his military background. His time at the U.S. Air Force Academy, along with the service of members of his family, inspired his commitment to supporting military personnel and first responders. For the third consecutive season, fans joined Skenes in raising funds for the Gary Sinise Foundation. He pledged to donate $100 per strikeout and increased his fundraising goal for the 2026 season to $150,000, further demonstrating his dedication to giving back and supporting those who serve the nation and their communities. Through the Serving Heroes event, the organizations not only recognized the sacrifices of Pittsburgh-area first responders but also provided tangible resources that enhanced public safety and reinforced a shared commitment to service, gratitude, and community support.
