About the job

Requirements
  • At least 1–3 years of experience in financial modeling, corporate finance, or a related quantitative role.
  • Strong technical modeling skills, including building, auditing, and troubleshooting complex Excel models from scratch.
  • Working knowledge of discounted cash flow analysis, capital stack construction (debt, equity, and mezzanine), discount rate and cost of capital concepts, and internal rate of return, net present value, and other return metrics used to evaluate deal economics.
  • Strong attention to detail and comfort validating assumptions across multiple sources.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to translate model output for people who do not work in finance.
  • A bachelor's degree in finance, economics, or another quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Analytical rigor: build models and analyses that hold up under review, check work before sharing it, and catch inconsistencies in underlying data.
  • Assumption validation: obtain needed inputs from other teams, pressure-test them, and raise discrepancies before they reach a pricing output.
  • Communication clarity: explain model findings and implications to people outside Finance to support their decisions.
  • Reliability: deliver recurring work on time and raise deadline risks early.
Responsibilities
  • Build, audit, and maintain the programmatic pricing models used to structure and price deals across Sparkfund's Distributed Capacity Procurement programs.
  • Update and refine existing models as program economics, deal structures, or market conditions change.
  • Build bespoke financial models for one-off pricing structures or deal structures that fall outside existing templates.
  • Partner with Business Development, Program, and Project teams to source the cost, revenue, timing, and financing assumptions that feed pricing models.
  • Validate assumptions against underlying source data and flag discrepancies before they reach a pricing output.
  • Translate model outputs into terms non-finance stakeholders can use to structure and negotiate deals.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with project finance structures or energy asset modeling.
  • Experience in infrastructure, energy, or utility-facing businesses.
  • Experience building models that support live deal negotiations.

About the company

Sparkfund operates a platform and financing model in the energy-as-a-service (EaaS) market, helping commercial and industrial customers upgrade energy infrastructure such as HVAC, lighting, and electric vehicle charging through a subscription plan. Instead of paying upfront, clients enter a recurring payment that covers the technology, installation, and ongoing maintenance. The company’s Lens platform connects utilities, energy service companies (ESCOs), and manufacturers, streamlining the end-to-end process of identifying, developing, financing, and implementing EaaS projects so partners can offer subscription-based energy solutions to their customers. Sparkfund generates revenue by taking a portion of the subscription payments from projects it facilitates. Its goal is to expand access to energy efficiency and decarbonization by removing upfront capital barriers and enabling scalable deployment of sustainable infrastructure.

What believers are saying

  • Xcel's October 2025 proposal and April 2026 approval validate Sparkfund's utility model.
  • Google committed $50 million in February 2026, subsidizing Capacity*Connect deployment economics.
  • Bill Bush became CFO in March 2025, signaling Sparkfund expects larger capital-intensive operations.

What critics are saying

  • Minnesota regulators imposed November 2027 evaluation milestones, delaying proof of durable economics.
  • Xcel's 2026 approval still left customer-owned aggregator alternatives deferred, limiting Sparkfund's category control.
  • Sparkfund's model depends on utility adoption; one failed flagship program crushes pipeline credibility.

What makes Sparkfund unique

  • Sparkfund won Xcel's 2026 Capacity*Connect, the first-in-the-nation distributed capacity procurement.
  • Pier LaFarge built Sparkfund around utility deployment services, not generic building decarbonization software.
  • Sparkfund claims 3,100-plus projects across 43 states, showing unusual operating scale.
