About the job

Requirements
  • You have 3+ years of professional experience designing software products.
  • You can run a project end-to-end, from research and sketches through prototypes and polished user interface to a clean handoff to engineers.
  • You are fluent in Figma and adjacent tools.
  • You are comfortable with multidisciplinary technical complexity and willing to talk to engineers and learn from scientists.
Responsibilities
  • Work alongside the current designer, software engineers, automation engineers, and founders as the first dedicated product designer on the team.
  • Grow into owning design end-to-end.
  • Design novel interfaces that surface editable details and communicate lab automation to scientists while making the user interface pleasant to use.
  • Conduct user research, shape information architecture, design the interface, and observe real scientists using the product.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience designing for the life sciences, lab workflows, or a technical domain where users are experts in a field unfamiliar to the designer.
  • Familiarity with dev-tool or visual programming tools, including projectional editors, node graph tools, program state visualization, errors, and diagnostics.
  • Startup or small-team experience, especially at an earlier stage.
  • Familiarity with frontend work and the interplay between design and technical trade-offs.
  • A side practice such as illustration, motion, printmaking, or ceramics.

About the company

Tetsuwan Scientific develops AI-powered laboratory scientists by integrating artificial intelligence with robotic lab systems and natural language processing to automate high-complexity experiments for research institutions. Its AI scientist combines planning software, a robotic execution platform, and NLP interfaces to design, run, and analyze experiments end-to-end, continually optimizing methods based on results. The company differentiates itself by treating the research workflow as a unified AI-driven system rather than just automating individual tasks. Its goal is to accelerate scientific discovery and address global challenges by providing scalable AI-assisted research capabilities to universities, national labs, and private research institutions.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • June 2026 hiring shows active product build and continued engineering investment.
  • TechCrunch on December 22, 2024 named La Jolla Labs as an alpha customer.
  • August 2026 profiles say Tetsuwan raised $5.7 million, funding runway for iteration.

What critics are saying

  • Wet-lab failures destroy trust fast; one bad autonomous run can kill enterprise adoption.
  • 2024-2026 hiring for compiler and backend talent exposes heavy execution risk before scale.
  • Competitors like self-driving labs and automation incumbents can outspend Tetsuwan on validation.

What makes Tetsuwan Scientific unique

  • ResearchOS translates experimental protocols into robot code through browser workflows in 2026.
  • Tetsuwan runs cloud-lab experiments remotely, not just isolated robot arms.
  • Cristian Ponce and Théo Schäfer pair biology, compilers, and robotics expertise.
