Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant Certificate/Diploma program is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, is required.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • A current Medical Laboratory Personnel License in Nevada is required; if unavailable upon hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration.
  • Fire Life Safety Training certification is required; if unavailable upon hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration, for positions in Los Angeles City.
  • Ability to obtain and record patient vital signs and medication lists.
  • Ability to monitor patient flow, prepare patients and exam rooms, and assist physicians with examinations and minor clinical procedures.
  • Ability to prepare patient charts with relevant medical information, including X-rays and laboratory work, and arrange special equipment.
  • Ability to schedule physician-ordered diagnostic tests.
  • Ability to maintain patient privacy, safety, confidentiality, and infection-control compliance.
  • Ability to obtain blood specimens by venipuncture or capillary methods and assess, process, distribute, or package specimens according to established guidelines.
  • Ability to maintain files, records, equipment inventories, and office-supply inventories and perform related clerical duties.
  • Ability to record patient information in charts and electronic health records according to Joint Commission standards.
Responsibilities
  • Determine patient care needs and direct patients accordingly.
  • Prepare patient charts before appointments, including X-rays and pertinent laboratory work, arrange special equipment, set up exam rooms, assist physicians with examinations, and monitor patient flow.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and obtain and record vital signs.
  • Keep health care delivery areas stocked, organized, cleaned, and disinfected.
  • Maintain files and records, oversee equipment and office-supply inventory, photocopy, collate, fax, mail, and prioritize incoming mail for handling or routing.
  • Ensure physician orders for medications and treatments are implemented by appropriate staff.
  • Provide coverage or relief for co-workers and communicate patient status during coverage.
  • Assist physicians with examinations and procedures.
  • Record patient information in charts and electronic health records according to Joint Commission standards.
  • Obtain blood sample specimens by venipuncture or capillary methods in response to clinician testing requests, considering the patient’s age.
  • Receive and screen specimens for acceptability according to established guidelines.
  • Process, distribute, or package received specimens.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least 1 year of experience in an acute care setting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Familiarity with word processing, GECB, COR, Cerner, ProSolv, and scheduling software.
