Oportun launches AI tool to automate savings for recurring bills.

Oportun launches AI tool to automate savings for recurring bills. July 28, 2026 Oportun, a Nasdaq-listed financial services company, has launched Smart Bills, an AI-powered feature within its Set & Save platform designed to help users prepare for recurring expenses. The tool automatically sets aside money for regular payments including rent, utilities, insurance and subscriptions. By analysing users' income and spending patterns, Smart Bills calculates "safe-to-save" amounts and reserves funds ahead of upcoming payment dates. The feature can also identify recurring expenses users may want to track, while allowing them to adjust savings limits, pause contributions or withdraw funds when needed. Smart Bills builds on Oportun's existing Set & Save platform, which uses AI-driven analysis of income and spending behaviour to help users automatically allocate money towards savings goals. Since launching in 2015, the company said Set & Save has helped members accumulate more than $12.8bn, with average users saving $1,800 annually. Early adoption data from Oportun shows Smart Bills users are saving more frequently, with members using the feature typically saving 48% more each month than those using Set & Save alone. Users have collectively saved more than $14m through the tool, with car payments, rent and utilities among the most commonly added expenses. The launch reflects a broader shift across consumer finance, with FinTech companies increasingly using artificial intelligence to provide personalised budgeting, savings and financial management tools. Rather than simply tracking spending, newer AI-powered solutions are attempting to help consumers anticipate expenses and make proactive financial decisions. Oportun head of savings Annie Ma said, "Set & Save makes it easier for people to build healthy financial habits in a way that works for their everyday lives. With Smart Bills, we're helping members connect their savings to recurring priority expenses, so they can better budget, plan ahead, and feel more prepared for the moments when bills are due."
