Citrix has launched "Citrix DaaS Flex", a desktop-as-a-service product that analyses organisations' endpoint needs to optimise costs. The tool, developed from an internal cost-control exercise, assesses which users need full cloud PCs versus managed browsers or published applications. Citrix general manager Shawn Bass said many organisations overspend on inappropriately powerful virtual machines. The service creates user "personas" – typically three categories for task workers, knowledge workers and power users – and runs virtual PCs on Azure. Flex uses a credit-based pricing system spanning three-plus years, with monthly billing. Citrix budgets for 10-14 hours daily usage and absorbs any excess Azure costs. The company plans to expand to other cloud platforms and on-premises infrastructure, with a channel version in development.
