What believers are saying

  • Kansas City and Lafayette openings target 2027, giving Buc-ee’s fresh regional entry points.
  • Born United paid $850,000 in September 2026, validating Buc-ee’s enforcement power.
  • Murfreesboro opens November 16, 2026, while six more stores are slated for 2027.

What critics are saying

  • Buc-ee’s trademark aggressiveness triggers backlash, as Ohio litigation and John Oliver amplified criticism.
  • Expansion depends on local approvals and infrastructure; Oklahoma City and Lafayette still need execution.
  • If expansion stalls, Wawa and Sheetz keep taking share while Buc-ee’s growth narrative erodes.

What makes Buc-ee's unique

  • Buc-ee’s turns highway stops into destination retail, with 74,000-square-foot stores and 120 pumps.
  • Arch Aplin III keeps expansion disciplined, targeting business-friendly states like Louisiana and Kansas.
  • Its brand moat combines spotless restrooms, brisket, and obsessive merchandise protection through litigation.

Construction on new Kansas City Buc-ee's progressing quickly, opening date moved.

Construction on new Kansas City Buc-ee's progressing quickly, opening date moved. KANSAS CITY, Kan. - A popular mega-convenience store is opening one of its newest locations earlier than expected. The Buc-ee's coming to Kansas City, Kansas, was originally slated to open next October. Construction is coming along fast and it is now set to open in the spring. The store will have 120 gas pumps, a large car wash area and 12 electric vehicle charging stations. The good news comes after Urbandale, Iowa, rejected plans for it to be home to the first Buc-ee's in the Hawkeye State. Several Iowa cities have thrown their hat in the ring to claim that title. Those include West Des Moines, Norwalk, Colfax and Bondurant. Even Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds is helping find a community willing to welcome the new travel center, famous for its giant size, exceptionally clean restrooms and around a hundred gas pumps. Lastly, contrary to someone's wishful thinking, a Buc-ee's will not be coming to Baring, Missouri. For the next few months, the closest location to the Tri-States is in Springfield, Missouri.

Lafayette Buc-ee's finally sets a November groundbreaking date.

Lafayette Buc-ee's finally sets a November groundbreaking date. Lafayette's long-delayed Buc-ee's project has a new date to circle. After months of uncertainty around the southern Louisiana store, the company has now set a November 9 groundbreaking ceremony - an important step beyond the status covered in its earlier look at where both Louisiana Buc-ee's projects stand. The ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the future store site near Louisiana Avenue and Interstate 10 in Lafayette. Buc-ee's has not announced a specific opening day, and its own website still lists Lafayette with an estimated 2028 opening. My latest videos. What the November date actually means. Acadiana News First reported that Buc-ee's set the November 9 ceremony for what it described as the company's first South Louisiana store. That is the clearest public milestone yet for a project that has spent years moving through planning, design and infrastructure work. The date is worth reading carefully, though. The site has not been sitting untouched while everyone waits for a ceremonial shovel. Local development outlet Developing Lafayette reported in August that the project had received a full vertical building permit and that site and foundation work had already been underway. That means the November event is best understood as the formal groundbreaking ceremony - not necessarily the literal start of all construction activity. That distinction matters because Buc-ee's projects often advance in stages. Road work, drainage, utilities, permits and site preparation can happen before a highly visible groundbreaking event. For Lafayette residents, the bigger takeaway is that the project now has both active work and a company-announced ceremony on the calendar. Lafayette is still behind Ruston. Louisiana is getting two Buc-ee's locations, but Lafayette is not expected to be the first one to open. Buc-ee's currently lists Ruston for 2027 and Lafayette for 2028. The company also warns that its estimated opening dates can change, so neither year should be treated as a guaranteed grand-opening date. Ruston is farther along and is expected to bring Buc-ee's to Louisiana first. Lafayette would then give the chain a major Interstate 10 location in the southern part of the state, near the I-49 corridor and within easy reach of travelers moving between Texas and southeastern Louisiana. What happens next. The November 9 ceremony gives Lafayette something it has lacked for much of this project: a concrete near-term milestone. It does not lock in a 2028 opening day, and plenty can still change during a build of this size. But the project has moved well beyond the stage where residents were simply waiting for signs that Buc-ee's was still coming. For now, the company's public timeline remains 2028. The difference is that Lafayette finally has a visible construction milestone to watch on the way there. Buc-ee's sets Nov. 9 groundbreaking for $82 million Lafayette store.

Buc-ee's sets Nov. 9 groundbreaking for $82 million Lafayette store. The scheduled ceremony marks a milestone for the planned travel center at Interstate 10 and Louisiana Avenue. Lafayette Daily Advertiser Sept. 30, 2026, 12:19 p.m. CT * Buc-ee's will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Lafayette store Nov. 9. * The $82 million travel center will be at I-10 and Louisiana Avenue. * The project is expected to create at least 150 jobs and generate significant local tax revenue. * Plans for the store include over 74,000 square feet of retail space and 120 gas pumps. Buc-ee's is scheduled to hold a groundbreaking ceremony Nov. 9. The ceremony is set for 11 a.m. at the future store's location near Interstate 10 and Louisiana Avenue at 3400 Louisiana Ave. The Texas-based travel center chain announced the Lafayette location in December 2024. Plans called for more than 74,000 square feet of retail space and approximately 120 gas pumps, according to the Lafayette Economic Development Authority. The location will give drivers along I-10 a new stop in Acadiana for fuel, food and the chain's popular snacks. What will Buc-ee's bring to Lafayette? LEDA's original 2024 announcement outlined an $82 million investment, including $12.5 million for public infrastructure. The company projected at least 150 jobs with starting pay of $17 an hour and an average annual payroll of $9 million. Those figures were announced in 2024. LEDA also estimated the store would generate about $1.5 million annually in local sales tax collections once operational, providing revenue for local government entities. In the original announcement, LEDA President and CEO Mandi D. Mitchell said the project would bring investment, jobs, and visitors to North Lafayette. "This new store will bring new investment and valuable jobs to North Lafayette, and it will attract even more new visitors to our community, further fueling the growth and vibrancy of our local economy," Mitchell said in 2024. Where is the Lafayette Buc-ee's being built? The travel center will be located at the Louisiana Avenue exit on I-10, on land purchased from the Castille family. To support the development, the Lafayette City Council, acting as the board for the Mile Marker 103 Economic Development District, approved an additional 2% sales tax on purchases at the store, according to LEDA's 2024 announcement. The additional tax was intended to help offset the company's investment in public infrastructure over time. Founded in 1982, Buc-ee's has grown from its Texas roots into a destination for travelers drawn to its large stores and snack selection. When will Buc-ee's open in Lafayette? The groundbreaking ceremony will mark a milestone for the Lafayette project. An updated opening date was not included in the information provided for the event. The original 2024 announcement targeted an opening in the second quarter of 2026. Update that timeline before publication. Oklahoma City in 'active conversations' with Buc-ee's about opening state's first location. Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt announced Tuesday that leaders are in "active conversations" with Buc-ee's about opening the state's first-ever location. By: KJRH Web Staff Posted 9:29 AM, Sep 29, 2026 and last updated 13 minutes ago OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt announced Tuesday that leaders are in "active conversations" with Buc-ee's about opening the state's first-ever location. Holt's announcement said the Buc-ee's would be located at Interstate 40 and Cimarron Road in West Oklahoma City. With more than 50 locations in the United States, Buc-ee's has built a major following off of its clean bathrooms, plethora of gas pumps and grab-and-go food options. Holt said new infrastructure will be necessary to bring Buc-ee's to Oklahoma. Tuesday, Oklahoma City Council approved an agreement with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and the development company associated with Buc-ee's. "Though work lies ahead, we look forward to the opportunity to welcome Buc-ee's to OKC!" Holt said.
