Requirements
  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and current Physician Assistant licensure, or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and current APRN licensure.
  • For APRN candidates, AGPNP/ANP or FNP training is required for the stated patient populations and care settings.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a Physician Assistant or APRN in an Emergency Department setting, or completion of an Emergency Medicine Fellowship or Residency.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification.
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification.
  • DHEC and DEA license applications must be started before the first day.
  • The APP must maintain sufficient clinical activity to demonstrate continued competency in the assigned patient population, clinical setting, procedures, and privileges.
  • The role requires physical ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach, use both hands and legs, perform repetitive motions, use a respirator when qualified, maintain corrected 20/40 vision, work in a latex-safe indoor environment, and handle stated lifting and force requirements.
  • The APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, continuing nursing education or continuing medical education, and other credentials required by applicable policies and state law.
Responsibilities
  • Provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services through direct patient care in the adult emergency departments.
  • Take comprehensive patient histories and perform physical examinations.
  • Evaluate and treat patients using history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results under the practice agreement or scope-of-practice guideline.
  • Perform authorized procedures including local and digital anesthesia, laceration repair, foreign-body removal, trepanation of subungual hematomas, incision and drainage of abscesses, urethral catheterization, peripheral venous access, central-line placement, thoracostomy, endotracheal intubation, arterial puncture, venipuncture, lumbar puncture, splint application, and arthrocentesis.
  • Initiate referrals to other healthcare providers and consult with the attending or collaborating physician.
  • Document and bill for direct care provided.
  • Use current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice.
  • Perform and participate in quality and performance-improvement activities and clinical research.
  • Participate in and support organizational accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for professional practice through participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Precept students enrolled at MUSC as advanced practice provider students and facilitate the learning of new team members.
  • Work assigned 10-hour shifts that may include weekdays, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Maintain required participation in available PRN shifts, with a minimum of one shift per month or three averaged per quarter when sufficient qualified shifts are offered.
Desired Qualifications
  • AGACNP or ACNP training for acutely ill or injured adult patients.
  • FNP training with current Emergency Room Nurse Practitioner certification.
  • AGPNP/ANP training with current Emergency Room Nurse Practitioner certification.
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support certification, as required by the Level I Trauma Center.
