Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Associate’s Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma program.
  • Twelve months of appropriate clinical nursing experience in the area of expertise is required.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification is required within 90 days.
  • Current registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse, or current compact registered nurse licensure to practice in North Carolina, is required.
  • Registered nurses without a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or higher must enroll in an appropriate Bachelor of Science in Nursing program within two years of their start date and complete it within seven years.
Responsibilities
  • Plan, provide, supervise, and document professional nursing care using the nursing process in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures.
  • Use professional nursing judgment to individualize the plan of care based on assessment of the patient’s baseline needs and response to care.
  • Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of licensed and unlicensed care providers.
  • Assist nursing personnel in delivering nursing care and act as team leader or charge nurse for a group of patients or an entire unit as assigned.
  • Monitor and initiate corrective action to maintain the environment of care, including equipment and material resources.
  • Maintain required competencies, identify learning needs, and seek appropriate assistance or educational offerings.
  • Act as a preceptor and support the development of other team members and formal learners.
  • Participate in identifying clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and in performance improvement activities.
  • Document assessments, plans of care, interventions, evaluations, and re-evaluations of patient status.
  • Assess nursing needs of acutely and chronically ill patients.
  • Independently seek appropriate resources and collaborate with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team members, physicians, administrators, and leadership.
  • Educate patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care.
  • Float to specialty areas within the nurse’s specialty, including emergency services, medical/surgical, critical care, cardiac services, and oncology.
  • Participate in rounds with patients as part of a multidisciplinary team.
