About the job

Requirements
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field.
  • At least five years of professional software engineering experience focused on machine learning and artificial intelligence systems development in research, applied R&D, or production environments.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and modern machine-learning and artificial-intelligence development workflows.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and testing end-to-end machine-learning, artificial-intelligence, or simulation-driven software systems, including data ingestion, model development, experimentation, and deployment.
  • Hands-on experience with machine-learning frameworks, particularly PyTorch, including model training, fine-tuning, evaluation, and experimentation.
  • Experience in high-performance computing, distributed computing, or accelerated environments such as GPUs and multi-node systems.
  • Background in database systems, including relational databases such as PostgreSQL or SQL and graph databases such as Neo4j, Memgraph, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with cloud-computing environments such as Azure, AWS, or GovCloud equivalents, including containerized or scalable machine-learning workflows.
  • Software engineering fundamentals including version control, modular design, testing, documentation, and reproducibility.
  • Ability to rapidly prototype solutions and transition them toward robust, deployable systems.
  • Ability to contribute to technical planning, system architecture decisions, and problem decomposition.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Responsibilities
  • Perform software research and development, including software development and implementation, prototype modeling and simulation, design, and experimentation.
  • Test and validate software systems and software intended for prototype deployment.
  • Provide software development subject-matter expertise across diverse application areas and contribute to proposals, publications, and white papers.
Desired Qualifications
  • An advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) focused on applied machine learning or artificial intelligence, network science, optimization, or data-intensive systems.
  • Experience supporting government, defense, or security-related R&D programs.
  • Experience developing or integrating simulation-based models, including physics-based, network-based, agent-based, or stochastic simulations, for system analysis, experimentation, or decision support.
  • Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation architectures, vector databases, embedding pipelines, and large language model-integrated systems.
  • Background in network science and graph analytics, including graph modeling and analysis using tools such as NetworkX.
  • Experience with graph-based machine learning or graph neural networks.
  • Experience with modeling and simulation techniques, including network, agent-based, or discrete-event simulation; Monte Carlo or stochastic simulation methods; and simulation-in-the-loop or synthetic data generation for machine-learning training and evaluation.
  • Experience integrating simulation outputs with machine-learning models, decision-support systems, or analytical pipelines.
  • Deep understanding of PostgreSQL/PostGIS, geospatial analytics, and large-scale spatiotemporal datasets.
  • Exposure to user-interface or frontend development for technical applications, dashboards, or analyst-facing tools using Svelte, React, or similar frameworks.
  • Familiarity with MLOps practices, experiment tracking, and reproducible research pipelines.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across research, engineering, and operational stakeholders.
  • A security clearance.

About the company

What believers are saying

  • The July 2026 New York City campus launch expands admissions, brand, and employer access immediately.
  • The 840 Columbus residence hall adds 1,215 beds, supporting Boston enrollment growth through 2027.
  • Massachusetts awarded Northeastern $207,538.62 in FY26 safety research funding, validating its public-policy research engine.

What critics are saying

  • March 2025 hiring slowdowns and conservative FY26 budgets signal ongoing cost pressure.
  • Loss of two USAID grants in 2025 cuts research revenue and weakens federally funded labs.
  • Trade-secret litigation and Stephen Stoute appeals distract leadership and can escalate legal costs in FY27.

What makes Northeastern unique

  • Northeastern fused Marymount Manhattan on July 9, 2026, adding a New York City degree-granting campus.
  • Its co-op model still dominates experiential learning, anchoring employer relationships across campuses.
  • The network spans Boston, Oakland, London, and New York, widening student mobility and recruiting reach.
