Requirements
  • An Associate's degree and 2 years of laboratory experience are required, or 3 years of Laboratory Science experience and technical training are required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills are required.
  • The ability to prioritize and maintain focus while performing multiple tasks and function effectively in a rapidly changing environment with frequent interruptions is required.
  • Participation in continuing education is required.
  • The ability to maintain professional discretion with confidential patient results is required.
  • The ability to identify and resolve problems is required.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee all aspects of staff training for assigned teams and provide technical expertise to enhance laboratory staff development and day-to-day operations.
  • Ensure adequate staffing schedules for department-specific assignments, plan and post section-specific schedules, approve schedule changes, and communicate changes to appropriate individuals.
  • Monitor employee performance, hold staff accountable for accurate and timely completion of assigned activities, direct staff to adjust job activities and work volume, mentor staff, and participate in employee evaluations and competency assessments.
  • Assist in mediating or diffusing personnel conflicts, discuss personnel issues with appropriate leadership, promote positive employee engagement, participate in regular feedback, communicate concerns, and support improvement initiatives.
  • Oversee department-specific functions to ensure optimal operations, efficient specimen handling, and required department turnaround times.
  • Maintain accountability for shift cleanup, monitor daily checklists for pending tasks, coordinate and communicate information between shifts and with staff and area leadership.
  • Communicate policies and procedures, including safety, security, and customer service protocols.
  • Perform troubleshooting, provide written documentation when necessary, and make suggestions to department leadership for corrective action.
  • Define priorities during extraordinary situations, including sick calls, scheduled and unscheduled downtime, and emergency disaster situations.
  • Assist technologists in the pre-analytical processing of clinical trial study specimens.
  • Develop and maintain procedure manuals, checklists, training records, competency records, and job aids, and conduct the annual review of all documents.
  • Assess work processes and suggest improved work methods to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and solve operational problems.
  • Work with the leadership team and laboratory staff to plan for and accomplish departmental and organizational goals and objectives.
  • Monitor and ensure department compliance with technical and regulatory standards for New York State and other regulatory agencies inspecting the laboratory section.
  • Monitor staff compliance and participate in quality assurance initiatives and data collection for required monitors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
