- ARDMS certification is required.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is required.
- Basic computer knowledge is required.
- Knowledge and understanding of general anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology are required.
- Ability to use appropriate discretion when handling confidential information and materials is required.
- Perform two-dimensional ultrasonic recordings of internal organs for disease diagnosis and evaluation of organ malfunction.
- Participate in continuous quality improvement activities.
- Select appropriate ultrasound equipment according to examination specifications.
- Explain tests to patients and instruct and assist them in assuming the required examination position.
- Assess patients’ understanding of the examination process and informed consent.
- Select transducers and adjust equipment controls according to the organ examined, depth of field, and test specifications.
- Enter test data and patient information into the ultrasound equipment computer to maintain test-result records.
- Move the transducer over the specified body area and observe the display screen to monitor the quality of the ultrasonic pattern.
- Produce images of internal organs and record diagnostic data on magnetic tape, computer disk, strip printout, or film.
- Obtain permanent records of internal examinations by photographing displayed organ images or removing strip printouts.
- Assess and evaluate changes in the patient’s condition during examinations and inform the physician.
- Perform prescribed equipment quality-control checks.
- Maintain accurate quality-control logs and service records.
- Use all equipment properly and never operate equipment inconsistently with manufacturer instructions.
- Understand contraindications and potential hazards associated with different examinations.
- Apply knowledge of hospital policies and the functions of other departments.
- Provide care appropriate to patients of all ages and conditions, including neonates, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric, and general populations.
- A Bachelor of Science degree is preferred.
- One year of radiologic or imaging experience is preferred.
- Specific ultrasound experience and training are preferred.
- Graduation from an American Medical Association-approved school of Radiologic Technology is preferred.
- Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists is preferred.
