Barhale to build Alconbury wastewater capacity.

Barhale to build Alconbury wastewater capacity. 45 minutes Anglian Water's @one Alliance has chosen Barhale to construct the £14.8m, 7.5km, pipeline needed for wastewater capacity at the planned Alconbury Weald new town in Cambridgeshire. The new town is planned on the site of the former RAF Alconbury, and has permission for around 6,200 homes and 190,000 sq m of employment floorspace. Barhale has been appointed to construct a twin pipeline at diameters of 400mm, 315mm and 250mm, predominantly in open-cut, around the eastern side of Huntingdon. The route across the development site will be 1.5km long, with the remainder mainly crossing agricultural land. The route avoids the disruption a more direct route through Huntingdon town centre would cause. The pipeline will discharge directly into Huntingdon Water Recycling Centre inlet works, at a flow rate of 144l/s. An existing pumping station at Alconbury Weald does not have sufficient capacity so developer Urban&Civic will build a new terminal pumping station. HDD will be used at 10 locations, including a complex crossing of the East Coast Main Line, where Barhale will install twin 355m-long 630mm sleeves to slipline the 400mm pipe, and beneath the River Great Ouse, where twin 292m-long 400mm sleeves will accommodate the 250mm pipeline. At the River Great Ouse crossing, Barhale will use track mats and Bailey bridges to cross drainage dykes and to avoid the archaeologically sensitive ridge and furrow feature. To improve materials management and safety along the site, Barhale will also trial use of a new Wacker Neuson off-road dumper with a skip change system. When not operating as a conventional dumper, it can be fitted with a flatbed, offering greater carrying capacity than a standard pickup truck while providing off-road capability. Ashley Jordan, construction manager, Barhale, said: "Housing and commercial growth, together with climate change and urban creep, mean the existing sewer network will no longer meet demand by 2027. This project provides the necessary additional capacity. "While the majority of the pipeline will be laid in conventional open-cut, the HDD installations beneath the East Coast Main Line and the River Great Ouse are quite challenging, particularly given the relatively wet ground conditions. "We are looking forward to working with Anglian Water and our @one Alliance partners to deliver an asset that will futureproof the network to support the continued growth of Alconbury Weald." The project is scheduled for handover to the developer in November 2027.

Video: Delivering critical water infrastructure to enhance climate resilience in the East of England.

Video: Delivering critical water infrastructure to enhance climate resilience in the East of England. 20 August 2026 Costain is the principal contractor at Anglian Water's site at Bexwell, where it is delivering a series of essential works to enable the strategic pipeline project, including the construction of a new pumping station. In the video below, Bryan Williams, Framework Director at Costain and Tom Shepherd, Senior Project Manager, explain what Costain is delivering at Bexwell. What is the strategic pipeline project? Anglian Water's strategic pipeline is one of Europe's biggest environmental projects and is the largest drinking water project the UK has seen for a generation. The pipeline is part of a 580km long water network that will stretch from North Lincolnshire to Essex and go into full supply before 2030. Why is the project so important? The East of England is one of the driest regions in the country, with only two-thirds of England's average rainfall. It is also one of the fastest growing, with potential population growth of one million people by 2045. Together, these challenges make the Anglian Water region particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Once complete, the pipeline will enable up to 55 million litres of water to be moved from 'wetter' to 'drier' parts of the region. About the Bexwell site Bexwell is a strategically important site on the strategic pipeline project. It acts as a connector for two sections of the pipeline: * To the north, a 51-kilometre pipeline between Bexwell and Etton, near Peterborough. * To the south, a 71-kilometre pipeline between Bexwell and Bury St Edmunds. What is Costain delivering at Bexwell? Costain is constructing a new pumping station at Bexwell to support the transfer of water from wetter to drier parts of the region. The project has required Costain to carry out a series of critical enabling works, which have included extensive modification works to an existing reservoir so it is fit to serve the new pipeline, as well as installing a temporary recirculation pump. These works have been completed with no disruption to the existing water network.

Anglian Water awards £1.5 billion major projects framework to four firms.

Anglian Water awards £1.5 billion major projects framework to four firms. Anglian Water Services Ltd has selected two joint ventures, one comprising Ferrovial Construction (UK) Limited and MWH Treatment Limited, and the other comprising VolkerFitzpatrick Limited and VolkerStevin Infrastructure Limited, for a new Major Projects Framework worth £1.5 billion excluding VAT, or £1.8 billion including VAT, according to a contract award notice published on the UK government's Find a Tender service. The Major Projects Framework is divided into two contracts, each awarded to two suppliers. Ferrovial Construction (UK) Limited and MWH Treatment Limited were appointed to the first contract, while VolkerFitzpatrick Limited and VolkerStevin Infrastructure Limited were selected for the second. The framework will support Anglian Water's capital investment programme, covering major water and wastewater infrastructure projects across the utility's operating region. The company said the arrangement would provide a collaborative delivery model and allow projects to be called off as investment needs develop. The framework applies to projects across the North East, East Midlands and East of England regions The contracts are expected to run for an initial five years from Aug. 27, 2026, to Aug. 26, 2031, with an option to extend for a further five years, potentially taking the total term to 10 years. The procurement, conducted under the utilities regime through a competitive flexible procedure, covers construction work for water and wastewater pipelines, treatment plants, pumping stations and drainage infrastructure. It also includes engineering design, site investigations, construction supervision and environmental planning services. The framework applies to projects across the North East, East Midlands and East of England regions. The award decision was made on Aug. 17, 2026, with assessment summaries issued to bidders on the same day. The contracts cannot be signed before Aug. 27, 2026, according to the notice. Anglian Water, based in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, serves one of the largest geographical regions of any UK water company. The utility has said increased investment is required to address climate change pressures, population growth and long-term resilience needs. All four appointed suppliers are classified as large enterprises in the procurement notice. MWH Treatment is listed as a voluntary, community or social enterprise, while the other three companies are not.
