Requirements
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • Candidates must have successfully completed an accredited medical assistant program, hold CMA/CCMA/RMA certification, or meet eligibility requirements to take the CMA/RMA exam and obtain it within six months of hire.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire or transfer and must be valid and in good standing in Michigan.
  • Candidates must have clinical skills required for Medical Assistant certification or registration, problem-solving and prioritization skills, and the ability to handle information confidentially.
  • Candidates must communicate clearly and effectively with patients, doctors, and staff; maintain patient confidentiality; work independently; and function as part of a healthcare team.
  • Personal computer skills and the ability to enter and retrieve data in computerized systems are required. EMR experience is highly desirable.
  • Candidates must maintain positive customer service and effective working relationships with physicians, office staff, and employees.
  • Candidates must be able to travel to multiple locations, sometimes on short notice, and adapt to schedule changes.
  • The role requires sustained alertness and concentration for computer-based or detailed work, considerable standing or walking, lifting objects up to 20 pounds, assisting with heavier patient-moving tasks, and assuming fatiguing positions or motions.
Responsibilities
  • Record vital signs and immunizations; perform initial patient assessments and obtain concise patient histories; and provide clinical information and support to providers.
  • Process and post information to patient charts, educate patients and families about medications, treatments, and care, and coordinate referrals.
  • Learn provider workflows and preferences, practice-specific procedures such as ultrasound-guided injections and casting, and maintain required practice competencies.
  • Prepare patients for examinations by completing assessments, histories, vital signs, medication reconciliation, and routine hearing, vision, or other testing; document pertinent information and review charts before appointments to ensure required requests and documents are present.
  • Administer physician-requested treatments, obtain specimens for urine testing and phlebotomy, perform laboratory tests as directed, and accurately document required information in patient charts.
  • Set up and assist physicians with procedures such as laceration repair and pap/pelvic exams.
  • Schedule outside tests or procedures, including x-rays and MRIs, and provide patients with appropriate preparation instructions.
  • Coordinate admissions and referrals and call in prescriptions.
  • Stock examination rooms, conduct daily supply inventories, and report items that need to be ordered.
  • Assist with appointment scheduling in the EMR system as required.
  • Screen calls and determine urgency, the need for appointments, or whether telephone advice is sufficient.
  • Assist with completing patient forms, including workers' compensation and disability forms.
  • Attend staff, educational, and other required meetings and perform other related duties assigned by nurses, the practice manager, or a physician.
