Requirements
  • An Associate's degree in a related field and one year of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Support Technician III, or three years of related work experience in a health care setting, including other laboratory divisions or similar roles, is required; an equivalent combination of education and experience is also accepted.

  • Proficiency with multiple hospital and laboratory information systems, including an Electronic Medical Record System, Laboratory Information System, Pre-Analytical Automation Control Unit, and middleware.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee and coordinate the flow of specimens throughout the laboratory.
  • Provide oversight of the assigned section and hold staff accountable for professional conduct, technical performance, and accurate and timely completion of assigned activities.
  • Perform technical assignments involving related sequences of laboratory operations.
  • Process laboratory specimen information, patient demographics, patient billing information, and pre-analytical automation activities.
  • Follow written procedures and ensure appropriate laboratory, safety, and security practices are followed.
  • Identify and process specimens while maintaining specimen integrity for laboratory testing.
  • Train new or less experienced staff and act as Technician in Charge as needed.
  • Travel between testing locations as needed.
  • Monitor employee performance and department turnaround times; investigate issues, report corrective-action suggestions, document personnel issues, and participate in employee evaluations.
  • Troubleshoot missing samples and other problems, and define priorities during extraordinary situations such as sick calls, safety or security incidents, and emergencies.
  • Complete checklists, preventive-maintenance logs, work queues, and pending lists daily.
  • Participate in quality-assurance initiatives and collect shift data for quality-assurance monitors.
  • Assess work processes and suggest improved methods to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and solve operational problems.
  • Enter patient demographic, insurance, and required medical-record information accurately.
  • Log patient and test information from requisitions into the Laboratory Information System and verify that testing criteria are met.
  • Receive pre-accessioned specimens into the Laboratory Information System, reconcile batch manifests, account for specimens, and document discrepancies or unacceptable criteria.
  • Identify specialized testing requests, prioritize specimens to meet turnaround times, and triage samples received through the chute or drop-off window.
  • Prepare specimens by determining stability, volume, centrifugation needs, and aliquotting techniques.
  • Distribute specimens to the appropriate department for prompt analysis.
  • Perform specialized departmental studies and preventive maintenance; maintain and troubleshoot automation; resolve billing problems; handle samples for interfaced laboratories; create electronic manifests; prepare and batch specimens at appropriate temperatures; and ensure required documentation accompanies specimens for non-interfaced clients.
  • Process irretrievable tissues, determine source codes, enter accessioning data, support operating-room specimen retrieval, perform the eight-point quality-assurance check, verify specimen acceptability, load analyzers, and troubleshoot and resolve problems.
  • Receive and route phone inquiries from providers, physicians, customers, and laboratory personnel; investigate problem specimens and document complaints, specimen requests, and integrity issues in the Laboratory Information System.
  • Keep the laboratory orderly and clean to maintain a safe work environment.
