Requirements
  • An associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology is required.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification or an equivalent certification is required.
  • For the MLT II level, at least one year of clinical experience is required.
  • For the MLT I level, no experience is required; if not certified, certification must be obtained within the first year of employment.
  • Proficiency in the electronic laboratory computer system and departmental middleware systems is required.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare specimens for testing and perform positive patient identification using two identifiers.
  • Evaluate specimen acceptability, receive and accession specimens, process samples, and perform order evaluation using the electronic laboratory computer system.
  • Perform routine laboratory testing using automated and non-automated methods according to established procedures.
  • Recognize normal and abnormal laboratory values and complete warranted notifications.
  • Recognize computer data problems and troubleshoot laboratory instruments, equipment, and results.
  • Communicate technical testing information to medical and lay persons.
  • Interpret testing results appropriately based on sample type and test.
  • Create and review test and specimen pending worklists.
  • Stock assigned benches, quality-control new reagent lots and shipments, and order reagents at designated par levels.
  • Support test and instrument validation activities.
  • Perform, verify, and document quality-control testing before reporting patient results.
  • Document equipment problems, resolutions, process-improvement activities, and discrepancies according to established procedures.
  • Perform and document instrument maintenance according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Complete procedure, policy, competency, and competency documentation requirements using MediaLab by established deadlines.
  • Assist with orientation and training for new staff, students, and residents, including timely documentation and feedback.
  • Participate in continuing education and model Standards of Behavior in daily interactions.
  • Complete additional tasks assigned by the Director, Manager, Coordinator, or Team Leader.
