About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of experience in high-voltage Protection and Control testing and commissioning is required.
  • Familiarity with SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, Westinghouse, or equivalent relay platforms is required.
  • A satisfactory background and motor vehicle record check is required.
  • The candidate must pass applicable pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable-suspicion, and/or random drug testing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel sufficient to produce accurate test records, redlines, daily field reports, and task-level test and isolation plans for Senior or Lead review is required.
  • The candidate must be able to follow technical direction from a Senior or Lead and apply it accurately in the field, while beginning to exercise independent judgment on familiar, standard configurations.
  • The candidate must be able to work safely around energized electrical equipment and mechanical hazards, work in operational substations and construction environments, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • The candidate must be able to travel as required, work overtime and outage schedules as necessary, and work in outdoor conditions involving noise, vibration, heat, dust, oil, grease, and energized equipment.
  • The role requires adaptability across distribution and transmission substations, relay platforms and protection schemes, night and weekend outage schedules, and travel.
  • The role requires a questioning approach to testing, attention to detail, methodical work under outage conditions, clear communication with Senior or Lead staff, organizational discipline in records, and commitment to learning and professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Execute assigned relay protection testing using Doble, Omicron, RTS, SEL AcSELerator, GE Enervista, and equivalent platforms under Senior or Lead oversight.
  • Perform relay input/output testing, analog-to-digital metering checks, and individual element pickup and timing tests, and accurately document results.
  • Perform current transformer and voltage transformer testing, including ratio, polarity, phasing, and single-point grounding verification on familiar configurations, with oversight available for complex arrangements.
  • Execute breaker control circuit testing, including trip path verification, auxiliary contact checks, and breaker functional tests as directed.
  • Read and navigate one-line and three-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and panel layouts on standard configurations.
  • Identify station phasing and equipment orientation, seeking guidance on novel or complex configurations.
  • Apply power system fundamentals and basic power calculations, protection zones and equipment relationships, overcurrent, differential and basic impedance protection concepts, instrument transformer behavior and accuracy class, and breaker control circuit knowledge including trip coils, auxiliary contacts, and direct-current battery systems.
  • Navigate relay manufacturer instruction manuals and settings files to support assigned testing tasks.
  • Connect individual test results to the broader protection scheme with Senior or Lead coaching.
  • Engage with POWERX Academy training, study protection theory, relay platforms and commissioning standards, and apply learning to field assignments.
  • Develop test plans and task-level isolation plans for routine scopes for Senior or Lead review.
  • Review assigned drawing packages before testing and identify questions and potential inconsistencies for discussion with the Senior or Lead.
  • Ensure testing aligns with utility standards, NETA practices, and client-specific commissioning requirements as communicated by the Senior or Lead.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and organized test records, redlines, and daily reports.
  • Support and assist Test Engineers on assigned tasks, share developing knowledge, and reinforce safe work practices.
  • Communicate task status, observations, and concerns proactively to the Senior or Lead, and participate constructively in pre-job briefs, tailboards, and post-job reviews.
  • Maintain and promote a safety-first culture in substation environments; follow Lock Out/Tag Out procedures and switching boundaries, with Senior or Lead verification for complex isolations.
  • Apply Human Performance Improvement tools correctly, selecting appropriate tools with guidance as needed.
  • Perform live-dead-live checks independently on every task involving energized equipment.
  • Participate in daily safety discussions, job hazard analysis reviews, and pre-job briefs; comply with OSHA, NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection, utility requirements, and internal POWERX standards.
  • Escalate safety concerns or unexpected field conditions to the Senior or Lead immediately.
  • Maintain professional conduct in client and operations interactions, and communicate task status and observations for project reporting.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of commissioning activities, test results, and field observations.
  • Support the Senior or Lead in preparing turnover documentation and commissioning packages.
  • Perform additional responsibilities and tasks as required to support organizational goals and evolving business needs.

Desired Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Technology, or an associate degree in Electrical Technology or related field experience, is preferred.
  • Experience commissioning substations from 12.5 kV through 245 kV is preferred.
  • OSHA 30 certification is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and OSHA Electrical Safe Work Practices is preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR certification is preferred.
  • Familiarity with NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection requirements is preferred.

About the Company

POWERX

Non-invasive sensors monitor and reduce energy

PowerX develops a home energy management system called the PowerX Energy Suite that uses non-invasive sensors to monitor water, electricity, and gas in real time. PowerX Water attaches to water heaters and main lines to measure flow and detect leaks, while PowerX Electricity clamps onto the circuit box to identify each appliance's energy signature; data go to a central hub and the PowerX Terra AI platform. The AI learns household patterns, provides personalized savings tips, can automate actions like adjusting a water heater, and alerts users to leaks or inefficiencies. The system installs without plumbing or wiring changes and is sold directly to homeowners with a claim of about six months ROI, aiming to lower utility bills and carbon footprint.
