Responsibilities
  • Support and conduct security assessments of systems, data flows, and third party vendors
  • Perform log reviews and analyze security events and threats

CMA fines Wayfair £4.8m over false time-limited offers. 19th October 2026 The Competition and Markets Authority has fined Wayfair £4.8m for using false time-limited offers on its UK website. The regulator found that products promoted through "Daily Deals" and 24-hour "Flash Deals" were accompanied by countdown timers and messages suggesting customers needed to act quickly. Many products remained available at the same price or a lower price after the deadline. Wayfair admitted breaching consumer protection law and agreed to settle the case. The penalty includes a 40 per cent reduction for early settlement and the company has agreed not to appeal. The action was taken using the CMA's powers under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024. The regulator can fine businesses up to 10 per cent of global turnover for consumer-law infringements. The wider enforcement action also included penalties against Appliances Direct and Gold's Gym. The CMA said businesses must present genuine, accurate offers and allow customers enough time to make informed decisions.

Article by Christopher Wood | Oct 16, 2026 Wayfair is concentrating its fall advertising on sports with the "Wayfair Delivers" campaign, anchored by a new TV ad starring quarterback Matthew Stafford and his family. Stafford's status as an All Star quarterback gives the spot contextual relevance for football fans, while the family setting gives casual sports watchers a relatable hook. Together, the two audiences help Wayfair get the most from its spend. The retailer is spending five times more on network football games this year, according to the company. Wayfair will measure the campaign, which launched in September, on brand and performance metrics, Amanda Evans, head of brand, insights, and partnerships at Wayfair, said last week on a panel at Advertising Week New York (AWNY). A relatable family Wayfair's in-house design team and Paramount Media Labs, Paramount Advertising's full-service brand-content studio, developed the "Wayfair Delivers" campaign creative. The spot rolling out on major network football programming shows Stafford and his family shopping Wayfair to update their living space. "I think if you look at the spot, it looks like a lot of people's families on any given Sunday," Dayo Harewood, senior vice president of creative, brand studio at Paramount Media Labs, said at AWNY. "And so we really wanted to tease out that universal truth, and that visual of what it feels like having a maturing family, and look at your living room, and be like, 'OK this isn't working.' And who better to work with when you want to upgrade your space than Wayfair?" The creative features Stafford's wife and four daughters, adding to the realism and relatability of the ad. "We knew we had made a significant investment in football, and that 4Q was going to lean heavily in football, and that's where contextual relevance comes in," said Evans. "Nowadays, there's so much content, it's that breakthrough that you need, and that's what the Stafford family allowed us to achieve." Balancing brand and performance Data shaped every stage of the campaign. Wayfair used internal data insights to write the brief, then drafted and tested multiple scripts. After the shoot, it tested a rough cut of the finished ad. Another goal was an ad with broad enough appeal to connect beyond football audiences. "At Wayfair, we test everything," Evans said. "[The spot] performed well against an NFL audience, but it also performed well against a non-sports audience. And that's important because we're going to run it against sports. It performed really well against an NBA audience, too." Early results rank the Stafford family ad among the top-performing commercials Wayfair has ever produced, though colleagues reminded Evans that the results were still early. "Just because you're a brand marketer doesn't mean you can be vague on results," Evans said. "It's the whole notion of storytelling, backed by performance." Testing and AI Before launch, Wayfair tested a rough cut of the ad to measure brand trust and the perceived quality of Wayfair products, which is a barrier to trust, according to Evans. To boost quality scores among customers, Wayfair offers "Wayfair Verified" products on its site: a hand-selected group chosen by company product specialists who use a 10-point inspection system. Wayfair's brand team is adopting AI tools to support testing and review processes in its campaign. "Testing is expensive, and it's important to acknowledge that," said Evans. "For our big-investment spots, that's where AI has helped us with a lot of the testing. Instead of doing customer interviews, we have an AI bot, 'George,' who does the interviews for us." She added: "With AI, there's so much data at your fingertips, and that actually, in my opinion, makes human instinct more important." Fall initiatives at Wayfair are underway, with the company's biggest sales event of the year returning October 24-26, featuring discounts in time to entice consumers updating their homes as cool weather takes hold and the holidays approach. Wayfair has also introduced a loyalty program for its Perigold operation, a banner focused on luxury and professional shoppers. The Way Day sales event will feature savings on a broad range of home products with emphasis on entertaining essentials, furniture and seasonal decor, the company noted. Wayfair intends to prompt interest in the sales event by launching daily exclusive deals starting October 19. Once the main promotion begins on October 24, consumers can find a wide range of deals, including 24-hour flash deals and discounts on thousands of quality-vetted Wayfair Verified items, with bonus savings available to Wayfair Rewards loyalty program members. Consumers will find Way Days deals across the company portfolio, Wayfair indicated, including its namesake, AllModern, Joss & Main and Birch Lane operations. Wayfair Professional members will have access to exclusive pro-only deals. Feature initiatives include, according to Wayfair: * Early Deals. Pre-Way Day events will drop every 24 hours beginning October 19 and will include exclusive bargains for Wayfair Rewards Members and app users. * Doorbusters. The initiative comes amid continued strength in luxury spending and as Perigold has built momentum, growing more than 35% in the second quarter of 2026, according to Wayfair. With customers investing in high-quality, design-led products for their homes, the company said it designed Perigold Insider to deepen relationships with customers, encourage repeat engagement and help the banner capture a greater share of high-consideration home projects. The 10% back applies to eligible merchandise purchases made online or in-person at Perigold's Houston and West Palm Beach, FL, stores. Shoppers can apply the accrued rewards value to future Perigold purchases. Loyalty members retain the rewards as long as a membership remains active. Other perks include free shipping with no minimums, prioritized member support and exclusive member-only benefits, including early access to select sales The Perigold Insider membership program costs $175 per year. The Competition Markets Authority (CMA) has fined the online furniture retailer £4.8m and electronics retailer Appliances Direct £1.2m for misleading customers with time-limited offers. Meanwhile, Gold's Gym has been fined £48,000 for not telling customers the total price of memberships. Appliances Direct and Gold's Gym have been ordered to refund customers a total of £440,000. The BBC has contacted the three companies for comment. Thousands of Appliances Direct customers will receive refunds of £25 each on average while 726 Gold's Gym customers will get refunds of up to £50, according to the CMA. Hayley Fletcher, senior director for consumer protection at the CMA, said: "At a time when many households are carefully managing their budgets, people shouldn't lose out because of misleading sales tactics. "Businesses must treat their customers fairly and make sure they comply with the law - or risk hefty fines." |
