Requirements
  • Certification in a specialty group exercise format is required.
  • National certification in group exercise is required for higher levels.
  • A tuberculosis clearance is required.
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation/automated external defibrillator and First Aid certification are required.
  • Knowledge of designing, conducting, and implementing safe and effective group exercise classes.
  • Knowledge of general health and wellness.
  • For Level I, maintain CPR/AED and First Aid certification, a primary or specialty group exercise instructor certification, online YMCA primary group exercise certification, and other required online YMCA trainings.
  • For Level II, maintain a national group exercise instructor certification and an average of eight participants per class.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct safe, effective, and engaging exercise classes according to the class schedule description and YMCA standards and guidelines.
  • Develop relationships with members and communicate with them about the Group Exercise program and specialty classes.
  • Make announcements requested by the Healthy Lifestyles Director or Coordinator, including schedule changes, class substitutes, new classes, workshops, and events.
  • Provide encouragement and motivation to all class participants.
  • Provide modifications to meet the needs of participants at all levels.
  • Teach assigned classes or ensure that classes the instructor cannot teach are covered.
  • Substitute for other instructors when possible.
  • Teach no more than 10 classes per week with the YMCA Association.
  • Adhere to all Child Abuse Prevention guidelines.
