Requirements
  • An associate degree in Veterinary Technology and at least one year of experience as a licensed veterinary technician or an equivalent combination.
  • New York State licensure or eligibility to become licensed.
  • Strong communication, team-building, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including stressful situations, prolonged standing and kneeling, and lifting heavy patients that may exceed 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment while handling multiple tasks with competing deadlines and maintaining close attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships with staff, students, technicians, veterinarians, and clients.
  • Employees working in the hospital must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire.
Responsibilities
  • Perform scrub-nurse duties for various complex orthopedic and soft-tissue surgical procedures.
  • Maintain surgical log records and ensure charges are accurate and complete.
  • Assist veterinarians with pre-operative examinations, treatments, and procedures, and regularly update them on changes in patient condition.
  • Evaluate inventory and restock supplies in patient receiving, treatment, operating rooms, and general supply areas.
  • Instruct veterinary students and occasionally residents in small-animal restraint and handling, patient monitoring, injections, specimen collection, blood tests, and bandaging techniques.
  • Provide coverage and flexibility for a hospital operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including rotating university and calendar holiday coverage and emergency closings.
  • Cross-train with other services to support business continuity as time and business needs allow.
Desired Qualifications
  • Two or more years of experience as a licensed veterinary technician with surgical experience.
  • Veterinary Technician Specialists are encouraged to apply.
