About the company

Western Digital, which goes by WD, designs and makes hard disk drives, mostly the high-capacity models that cloud and AI data centers use to store huge amounts of data cheaply. In 2013, its HGST unit shipped the first helium-filled hard drives, which fit more disks into each drive and use less power. Its drives store data on stacks of spinning magnetic disks, and the lineup runs from Ultrastar data center drives to WD Red and WD Purple drives for home servers and security cameras. WD makes its money selling these drives to cloud companies, PC makers, and retail shoppers. Western Digital was founded in 1970 and is based in San Jose, California, and in 2025 it spun off its flash memory business as Sandisk.

What believers are saying

  • Sales are accelerating: revenue rose 44% in the quarter ended July 2026, and WD forecast up to 49% growth next.
  • Demand is locked in: in January 2026, WD said 2026 was nearly sold out, with contracts into 2028.
  • Room to grow: WD listed 346 open roles in October 2026, including 31 internships and 92 US jobs.

What critics are saying

  • A few buyers drive the business: three customers made 44% of fiscal 2026 revenue; the top 10, 73%.
  • WD trails on denser drives: Seagate's 44TB laser-heated drives reached two cloud giants by March 2026; WD's come in 2027.
  • Job cuts continue despite growth: WD booked $103 million in severance costs in the nine months to April 2026.

What makes Western Digital unique

  • It sells mostly to data centers, not shoppers: cloud customers made 89% of revenue in mid-2026, consumers 5%.
  • Most staff work in Asia: 88% of WD's roughly 40,000 employees are in Asia Pacific, where it builds its drives.
  • It stretches older drive technology further: by July 2026, WD was shipping 40TB drives without Seagate-style laser heating.

Western Digital stock falls over 50% from $800 peak despite 55% revenue jump to $4.4B

Western Digital's stock has fallen more than 50% from its June high of just under $800 and now struggles to stay above $400. Investors have soured on memory and storage stocks, though Western Digital has fallen harder than peers such as Micron Technology. On October 22, the company reported first-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue of $4.4 billion, up 55% year on year. Operating income rose 158% to more than $2 billion, driven by AI-related demand for storage. It also raised its dividend by 17%, though the yield is just 0.2%. Over three months the stock has dropped 26%, while the State Street Technology Select Sector SDPR ETF rose 7%. Investors may fear more competition and slower AI spending. Even with a price-to-earnings multiple of 13, the author sees no compelling buy given volatile earnings and an uncertain outlook.

Western Digital cashes in on storage demand.

Western Digital cashes in on storage demand. Western Digital's quarterly revenue surged 55 per cent as strong storage demand and higher prices gave the hard drive maker plenty to smile about. The company reported $4.38 billion in revenue for its first quarter of fiscal 2027, ending 2 October 2026. Revenue rose 17 per cent from the previous quarter. While PC manufacturers struggle to persuade customers to swallow rising component prices, WD appears considerably happier on the receiving end of the invoice. Net income attributable to common shareholders rose 54 per cent to $1.78 billion from a year earlier. GAAP diluted earnings per share rose 51 per cent to $4.63. Adjusted earnings per share climbed 161 per cent to $4.64. The distinction matters because the adjusted figures exclude costs and gains that affect the statutory accounts. Western Digital chief executive Irving Tan said: "Fiscal 2027 is off to a strong start, with results exceeding expectations, driven by robust customer demand and disciplined execution." The company's GAAP gross margin reached 57.8 per cent, compared with 43.5 per cent a year earlier. Its adjusted gross margin increased to 58.1 per cent from 43.9 per cent. Adjusted operating income rose 152 per cent to $2.15 billion, with the operating margin reaching 49.1 per cent. Selling storage has become a remarkably effective way of storing money. Cash generation strengthened. Operating cash flow reached $1.60 billion, while free cash flow totalled $1.38 billion, compared with $599 million a year earlier. Tan said WD was advancing through technology transitions to meet growing storage demand, broaden its customer base, and gain greater visibility into future orders. Western Digital chief financial officer Kris Sennesael said: "Our first quarter results demonstrate the continued momentum in our business, with robust exabyte growth and improved pricing driving another quarter of strong financial performance." The next-quarter forecast suggests management expects the good times to continue. WD projects revenue of $5.1 billion, plus or minus $100 million, representing annual growth of between 66 and 72 per cent. Its adjusted gross margin forecast is between 60 and 61 per cent. Adjusted earnings per share are expected to reach $5.80, plus or minus $0.20. Those projections remain forecasts, although they give suppliers elsewhere in the hardware industry something suitably irritating to read with their morning coffee. WD raised its quarterly dividend by 17 per cent to $0.175 per share. The payment is due on 17 December 2026 to shareholders registered at the close of business on 4 December. Oct 23, 2026

Western Digital 1Q profit grows on data storage demand, higher pricing - update.

Western Digital 1Q profit grows on data storage demand, higher pricing - update. Published on 10/22/2026 at 04:58 pm EDT By Elias Schisgall Western Digital's profit and revenue grew in the fiscal first quarter, as the company capitalizes on growing data-storage demand tied to the build out of artificial-intelligence infrastructure. Demand for Western Digital's hard disk drives remains strong, Chief Executive Irving Tan told analysts on a Thursday call, and is increasingly coming from customers outside the company's core base, such as neoclouds and AI frontier labs. The demand means Western Digital is able to sell its products at higher prices. The blended average selling price per terabyte of storage rose 28% during the first quarter. "Our visibility is extending further and with it our conviction in the durability of demand for data storage on HDDs," Tan said, adding that the company has visibility to 2030 or 2031 across its top seven customers. Shares of Western Digital fell 5.6% to $334.51 after the bell, after closing down 6.4% at $354.19. The stock had more than doubled in value this year through the close. Investors broadly rotated out of AI-connected stocks on Thursday, fueled in part by capital spending disclosures from Meta Platforms. The company on Thursday reported a profit of $1.78 billion, or $4.63 a share. That compares with a profit of $1.15 billion, or $3.07 a share, a year earlier. Stripping out certain one-time items, adjusted earnings were $4.64 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting $4.11 a share. Revenue grew to $4.38 billion from $2.82 billion. Analysts had been expecting $4.14 billion in revenue. For the current fiscal second quarter, the company guided for adjusted earnings of between $5.60 and $6.00 a share on revenue between $5 billion and $5.2 billion. Analysts currently expect second-quarter adjusted earnings of $4.84 a share on $4.57 billion in revenue. The company also lifted its quarterly dividend by 17% to 17.5 cents a share. The new payout, equal to 70 cents a year, represents a 0.2% annual yield based on the company's Thursday closing price of $354.19. The dividend is payable on Dec. 17 to shareholders of record as of Dec. 4. Write to Elias Schisgall at [email protected] Corrections & Amplifications This article was corrected on Oct. 23, 2026 because it incorrectly said the projections were for the first quarter. Analysts expect Western Digital second-quarter adjusted earnings of $4.84 a share on $4.57 billion in revenue. (END) Dow Jones Newswires 10-22-26 1858ET (C) Dow Jones - 2026

BofA raises Western Digital target to $800 despite slower capacity growth

Bank of America (BofA) raised its Western Digital price target to $800 from $720 on October 21, even as it cut its forecast for storage-capacity shipment growth. Analyst Wamsi Mohan expects fiscal first-quarter exabyte shipments to rise 21% from a year earlier, below management's longer-term target of about 25%. He expects average price per terabyte to rise 24%, as demand for hard drives still exceeds supply. BofA raised its fiscal 2027 earnings estimate to $22.37 per share from $19.17. It applies a lower 16-times earnings multiple, down from 19. Western Digital reports results on October 22. BofA expects revenue of $4.22 billion and adjusted earnings of $4.29 per share. Shares closed at $378.51 on October 21, up 3.89%.
