Navantia strengthens its cooperation with Croatian industrial partners in the framework of the Multi-Role Corvette (MRC) programme.

Navantia strengthens its cooperation with Croatian industrial partners in the framework of the Multi-Role Corvette (MRC) programme. Navantia has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Croatian companies AITAC and (Iskra Shipyard), setting out guiding principles for potential cooperation on engineering and industrial activities related to the Multi-Role Corvette (MRC) programme. The signatures, which took place on 1 October 2026 in Šibenik during DEFCROS 3, the Public Safety & Defense Expo, reinforce the Spanish-Croatian relationship and pave the way for long-lasting cooperation between Navantia and Croatian partners. In the context of the Multi-Role Corvette (MRC) programme, Navantia is moving forward in its cooperation strategy to develop joint opportunities with Croatian industry. Under the MoUs, Navantia, AITAC and Iskra Shipyard intend to explore potential cooperation across a broad range of engineering, shipbuilding and lifecycle-support activities, including: * Exchange of technical documentation, engineering data and programme information * Ship design, production engineering, digital engineering and Integrated Logistics Support (ILS). * Local shipbuilding and industrial participation, including outfitting, installation, integration, setting-to-work and testing activities. * Future maintenance, lifecycle and in-service support for the vessels Navantia teams up with the following partners: * AITAC, a Croatian engineering and digital solutions company, for design, engineering, outfitting and installation, setting to work, testing, ILS and lifecycle support activities * (Iskra Shipyard) a Croatian shipbuilding and ship repair company based in Šibenik, for shipbuilding, vessel integration, outfitting, production, installation, testing, commissioning and lifecycle support activities. By bringing together Navantia's experience in complex naval programmes with AITAC's engineering and digital capabilities and Iskra Shipyard's industrial and shipbuilding expertise, the agreements aim to strengthen Croatian participation throughout the different phases of the MRC programme. Through its experience in the design, construction, integration and through-life support of all types of naval vessels and submarines, as well as naval combat systems, Navantia seeks to establish long-standing partnerships with Croatian companies, creating added value for the defence and maritime sectors while supporting local industrial participation. "These MoUs represent the commitment to Croatia. We are a reliable partner and we offer our experience and know-how to strengthen the Croatian industry and to support the Croatian Navy", assured Alfonso Valea, Navantia's commercial director for Europe. "Signing this MoU with Navantia confirms that Croatian engineering expertise has a real role to play in the MRC programme. We look forward to exploring how AITAC's experience in ship design, digital engineering and ILS can support Navantia and the Croatian Navy," says Marijan Lorencin, CEO of AITAC. "This MoU marks a significant milestone in strengthening Iskra Shipyard's role in the naval and defence domain, particularly following our recent acquisition of 3. Maj Shipyard in Rijeka. In cooperation with the selected bidder and other Croatian partners, we are committed to contributing advanced shipbuilding expertise, industrial capacity, and local know-how to the MRC programme. Our goal is to establish a long-term strategic partnership that supports Croatia's sovereign naval capabilities while creating lasting value for the national maritime and defence industry," said Roko Vuletić, CEO of Iskra Shipyard.

Navantia Systems validates NAIAD architecture at NATO REPMUS 2026.

Navantia Systems validates NAIAD architecture at NATO REPMUS 2026. * 1 October 2026 * Edited By: Haley McQueen Navantia Systems once again demonstrated the integration of unmanned vehicles into SCOMBA NG, its next-generation digital architecture, during the REPMUS 2026 exercises organized by NATO in Troia, Portugal. Having participated in these exercises since 2022, Navantia used this edition to validate the evolution of NAIAD and test new capabilities in an operational environment. (Image credit: Navantia Systems) For this year's exercise, NAIAD was deployed across three locations: a node in Troia, an onboard node aboard the A-61 Carnota, and a node at the Navantia COEX Laboratory, which monitored operations throughout the exercise. Communications between the nodes primarily relied on secured satellite links and radio-based MESH network connectivity, complemented to a lesser extent by a 5G bubble due to the limitations of the operational environment. This distributed configuration enabled the sharing of a Common Operational Picture (COP) and live exercise video among the different stations, demonstrating NAIAD's ability to operate as a federated and scalable service in multinational operational experimentation scenarios. In addition, Navantia Systems established an exhibition area where military authorities attending the exercise were able to explore the latest SCOMBA NG capabilities and functionalities. The REPMUS 2026 demonstration represents one of Navantia's first steps toward distributed and collaborative naval systems. With NAIAD as its first operational example, ships, unmanned vehicles, and command centers will be able to share information and capabilities, enabling faster and more effective responses to complex threats. Navantia begins testing the AIP propulsion system on submarine S83.

Navantia begins testing the AIP propulsion system on submarine S83. June 16, 2026 Cartagena - Navantia, at its Cartagena shipyard, has begun testing of the Air Independent Propulsion system (AIP) already incorporated into the section of submarine S-83 'Cosme García', the third unit in the S80 series. These final tests are starting after all prior installation work on the various pieces of equipment required for their proper execution has been completed. The tests will make it possible to carry out the necessary adjustments to the system in its actual location before joining the 12-metre-long, approximately 400-tonne section to the rest of the submarine's pressure hull. The section of S83 carrying the AIP is located in a special test facility at the Cartagena shipyard, known as IPS3, where a multidisciplinary task force from the Submarine Business has carried out all the necessary checks to begin testing. Testing of the AIP in its section has begun with the first loading of liquid oxygen and bioethanol, from which the system produces hydrogen to fuel its hydrogen fuel cell and propel the submarine while submerged. It is therefore a third-generation AIP system - that is, it does not carry stored hydrogen, but generates it on demand from a liquid fuel - overcoming the limitations of previous generations currently in operation. Air-independent propulsion will give the S80 submarines the ability to operate submerged for weeks rather than days - the period for which current conventional submarines equipped with lead-acid batteries can remain underwater - thereby enhancing their stealth and deterrence capability. The AIP will undergo the checks set out in the programme's systems engineering manual on a unique test bench capable of simulating both the bow and stern of the submarine as well as real operating conditions, including diving depth and the submarine's forward speed. This will make it possible to carry out functional adjustments and demonstrations, including power generation with the AIP under various operating conditions, helping to optimise the planned schedule for testing the system in harbour. The testing process on board the S83 section represents a new milestone for the AIP, a system with a high level of national technological content that highlights the progress of the programme, with S82 undergoing harbour trials and S83 and S84, the next two units, under construction at the Cartagena shipyard. Navantia's S-80 programme involves the construction of four next-generation submarines for the Spanish Navy. Thanks to the air-independent propulsion system (AIP), these vessels can generate electrical power while submerged, using oxygen and bioethanol stored on board, enabling them to operate for extended periods without surfacing or carrying out snorkelling manoeuvres. With a high degree of stealth, advanced combat systems and state-of-the-art sensors, as well as a design optimised for long-duration operations, the S-80 submarines place Spain among the countries with the technological capability to develop this type of strategic platform.
