Requirements
  • Sufficient education to obtain a valid California registered nurse license.
  • At least 5 years of experience in the area of clinical specialty, formulating annual operating and capital budgets, and progressive supervisory or personnel management.
  • Familiarity with agency and regulatory compliance in inpatient care delivery systems.
  • A California registered nurse license is required at hire.
  • Integrative Agitation Management training is required within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse staff, physicians, and outside agencies.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of hospital personnel and external customers.
  • Ability to set priorities, achieve objectives, solve problems, meet deadlines, coordinate simultaneous projects, and make decisions.
  • Clinical and technical skills in patient care delivery.
  • Expert knowledge of key perioperative standards and compliance specifications, including AORN, ASPAN, AAMI, Title 22, and OSHA.
  • Experience within a union environment.
  • Knowledge of management and leadership theories.
  • Ability to read, write, understand, and follow English verbal and written instructions.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the ages of patients served.
  • Knowledge of lifespan growth and development and ability to assess patient data and identify age-specific care requirements.
  • Ability to meet the clinical expectations of the registered nurse position when necessary.
Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and direction to the assigned group within established objectives and policies.
  • Ensure coordinated working relationships among staff, physicians, and hospital departments by aligning resources with patient and staff needs.
  • Promote service excellence to improve patient care and customer service.
  • Solve problems and make decisions using consensus-based solutions serving patients, physicians, and staff.
  • Support the organization's long-term ability to serve patients, physicians, and the community.
  • Select candidates for open positions and promote performance development and high staff performance.
  • Monitor and update the patient classification system.
  • Participate in developing, implementing, and maintaining nursing standards that meet or exceed professional, regulatory, and government requirements.
  • Evaluate nursing staff knowledge, skills, and competencies and work with clinical nurse specialists and staff development to ensure clinical expertise.
  • Develop and maintain quality assurance and continuous quality improvement programs consistent with The Joint Commission.
  • Implement and maintain the department's scope of practice and clinical standards.
  • Implement a risk management program to prevent, minimize, or correct risks to patients and staff.
  • Promote collaborative practice with other healthcare disciplines to support integrated patient care and conflict resolution.
  • Represent the Intensive Care Unit to hospital departments, medical staff, and the community.
  • Ensure policy and procedure manuals remain current and reflect community, national, and organizational standards.
  • Assist with external agency reviews and business plans for new services.
  • Coach and mentor key staff, including direct and indirect reports.
  • Support physician satisfaction with patient care and efficient systems.
  • Prepare information needed to manage Intensive Care services.
  • Prepare for and actively participate in medical staff, governance, and department committees.
  • Provide support for critically ill patients and their families.
  • Incorporate current research, new interventions, and technological advances into nursing practice.
  • Use the nursing process competently in direct patient care.
  • Maintain nursing standards.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a related field with a concentration in Perioperative Nursing from an accredited nursing program.
  • Certified Nurse Operating Room certification at hire.
  • Experience in data management and analysis.
