Requirements
  • Proficiency in International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) credential is required.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Customer service and interpersonal skills to work effectively with internal and external customers and respond to requests in a timely and respectful manner.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct reviews of inpatient and outpatient coding under direct supervision and assure coding compliance with federal regulations.
  • Maintain up-to-date coding guidelines and coding policy changes.
  • Abstract complex patient-related data from medical records and code diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10 and CPT classification systems to facilitate medical billing.
  • Review, interpret, and assign diagnostic and procedural codes based on medical record documentation according to correct coding principles.
  • Perform documentation and coding work for medical billing, including abstracting patient-related data from medical records and coding diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10 and CPT codes.
  • Review coding-related charges and claim edits daily to ensure timely and accurate billing.
  • Obtain medical records and charge-fee information from patient care areas.
  • Contact other facilities to obtain medical records and information needed to bill for services rendered.
  • Verify charge capture and physician notes for completeness, abstract and enter relevant medical information from medical records, check for required signatures, and ensure proper documentation guidelines are followed.
  • Code diagnoses and procedures using classification coding systems.
  • Review charge documents for completeness.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
