Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree and eligibility for formal certification such as New Jersey Teacher of Disabilities (or of the Handicapped) required.
  • Minimum of one year of teaching experience in special education preferred
  • Eligibility for Highly-Qualified Teacher status required.
  • Knowledge of teaching methods and educational programs designed for students with learning, physical and behavior disabilities.
  • Effective teaching and facilitation skills required. Strong verbal and written communication skills and presentation skills required
Responsibilities
  • Plans and implements classroom instruction, specializing within one or more areas of curriculum, to specifically meet the educational needs of students and to encourage the best possible student educational experience.
  • Assesses abilities and capabilities of individual students; develops, organizes, and implements lesson plans and activities that are individual-specific, meet the learning needs of each student, encourage increased skills, and address specific IEP goals
  • Monitors existing IEPs to ensure that stated educational goals and objectives are appropriate, achievable, and continue to meet the educational needs of individual students
  • Recommends appropriate modifications to the existing IEP
  • May conduct parent training in the classroom and at home
  • Utilize the principals of Applied Behavior Analysis throughout observation, intervention, data collection, and assessment
