A high school diploma or equivalent is required at the time of hire.
Must be at least 20 years of age.
Must obtain detention officer certification within one year of hire; the required training is approximately five weeks and is paid.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Must be able to work various shifts, including night shift, at a 24/7 facility.
Must maintain knowledge of detainee management practices and procedures and applicable local laws, ordinances, and North Carolina statutes concerning inmate commitment and confinement.
Must be able to maintain detainee discipline and order, maintain accurate records, communicate courteously and tactfully with detainees’ families, attorneys, ministers, and others concerned with inmates’ welfare, and take prompt and effective action during facility emergencies.
Must adhere to the assigned work schedule and attendance policies; regular, predictable attendance is essential.
Responsibilities

An employee in this position is responsible for performing a variety of duties pertaining to the safety and security of detainees in the custody of the Buncombe County Detention Facility.

Typical Work Schedule:
Adheres to the assigned work schedule as outlined in the Sheriff’s Office and County attendance policies and procedures.
The Detention Facility is a 24/7 operation and as such persons must be able to work various shift assignments, including night shift.
Typical shift will be 12 hours with a compensated lunch break.
