Requirements
  • An associate’s degree or some college-level coursework in science or a related discipline and one year of experience, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, or certification.

Responsibilities
  • Perform, coordinate, and troubleshoot advanced laboratory duties under supervision, using advanced knowledge, judgment, and problem-solving skills.
  • Perform essential functions of a Laboratory Clinical Support Tech II and complete training in advanced assignments and/or successfully complete training for Lab Clinical Support III assignments designated by the section.
  • Serve as a primary resource to physicians, nurses, and other laboratory personnel regarding specimen handling and processing.
  • Use advanced knowledge of specimen requirements and stability.
  • Follow transport and shipping protocols to prepare specimens for transport to the designated laboratory for testing.
  • Interpret physician requests and use appropriate protocols for handling unique patient registrations and Laboratory Information System log-ins.
  • Use the Laboratory Information System to perform functions such as billing credits, test cancellations, result entries, report printing, and printing task and specimen tracking lists.
  • Receive incoming telephone calls and triage calls to the appropriate laboratory as necessary.
  • Manage requests for faxed results and provide specimen requirements and stability information.
  • Provide results to physician offices and health centers as necessary.
  • Resolve problems involving sample handling, missing information, split samples, sample retrievals, misdirected samples, and requests for additional samples.
  • Independently follow up on problems and discrepancies with the Patient Accounts Office, Patient Registration, Medical Records, and the laboratory Billing Office as needed.
  • Train new and current staff on new procedures and conduct remedial training as necessary.
  • Participate in quality monitors and initiatives and perform internal quality checks to facilitate smooth and accurate operations.
  • Proactively participate in regular feedback, communicate concerns, and support implementation of improvement initiatives.
  • Promote a positive employee engagement environment.
  • Perform other responsibilities and projects as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Customer service experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy/physiology is a plus.
