Small-cap picks: Tutor Perini and Gulfport Energy shine, while Ryder ($9.21B) raises doubts

StockStory has picked two small-cap stocks to watch and one to avoid, saying small caps are often overlooked by Wall Street but carry high risk because reliable analyst price targets are scarce. It advises caution on Ryder (NYSE:R), which has a $9.21 billion market cap. Sales grew 2.4% annually over two years, gross margin is 19.7%, and the company tends to burn cash. Shares trade at $238.10, or 14.8x forward P/E. Tutor Perini (NYSE:TPC, $4.13 billion market cap) is a pick. Revenue grew 18.2% annually over two years, and its free cash flow margin rose 7.6 percentage points in five years. Shares trade at $78.67, or 15.1x forward P/E. Gulfport Energy (NYSE:GPOR, $2.90 billion market cap) also makes the list. Revenue grew 10.8% annually over ten years, with a 70.9% gross margin and 17% free cash flow margin. Shares trade at $163.71, or 7x forward P/E.

Ryder expands Northeast network with two New Jersey used truck centres

Ryder System has expanded its used commercial vehicle network in northern New Jersey with two new facilities. The company relocated its Kearny centre to a larger site in Newark and opened a new location in North Bergen. The Newark facility, located at 474 Wilson Avenue, provides direct access to the Port of Newark, Interstate 95, and Newark Liberty International Airport. The North Bergen centre at 6214 Tonnelle Avenue marks Ryder's first used vehicle sales location south of the George Washington Bridge. "Northern New Jersey is one of the most important transportation markets in North America," says Eric Upchurch, vice president of vehicle sales at Ryder. The investments aim to strengthen Ryder's position in a key freight market whilst improving customer access to its used truck inventory.

Ryder Q2 revenue beats expectations at $3.35B, but margins squeeze amid dedicated and supply chain challenges

Ryder reported second-quarter revenue of $3.35 billion, exceeding analyst estimates of $3.30 billion, representing 5% year-on-year growth. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $3.73, beating expectations of $3.69. Despite the revenue beat, the market reacted negatively as operating margin remained flat at 8.5% compared to the prior year. Management raised full-year adjusted EPS guidance to $14.60 at the midpoint, a 1.2% increase. CEO John Diez attributed performance to the company's balanced growth strategy and highlighted improved conditions in used vehicle sales. He noted the resilience of Ryder's transformed business model, stating the company's contractual base has proven to be a key driver over the cycle. Analysts questioned management about dedicated contract renewals, rental fleet expansion plans, and the impact of business transformation on earnings seasonality.

Ryder System posts seventh consecutive quarter of EPS growth, free cash flow surges to $684M

Ryder System reported its seventh consecutive quarter of comparable earnings-per-share growth in Q2 2026. CEO John Diez attributed results to contractual revenue, strategic initiatives, and improving used vehicle sales. The company posted total operating revenue of $2.7 billion, up 3% year-over-year. Comparable EPS from continuing operations rose 12% to $3.73. Free cash flow increased to $684 million from $461 million, driven by lower capital expenditures. Fleet Management Solutions led earnings growth, with earnings before taxes rising 20% to $150 million. Management highlighted that over 90% of Ryder's revenue comes from long-term contracts, providing resilience during freight cycles. Rental utilization reached the company's 75% target on a 15% smaller average fleet. CFO Cristy Gallo-Aquino noted the quarter showed the strongest sequential increase in rental demand in four years.
