Requirements
  • Completion of high school education or vocational school education and a minimum of 1 year of combined educational and/or commercial experience in quantity cookery, including baking.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and perform basic arithmetic functions.
  • A current state-approved sanitation certificate is required.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to water and cleaning chemicals, higher-than-normal noise levels, and heat and humidity produced by commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Ability to safely lift and move 50 pounds, work from a step stool, walk and stand for prolonged periods, bend, reach, pull, and push.
  • Ability to manipulate utensils and equipment repetitively for variable periods of time, up to 65% of an assigned shift.
  • Ability to move between workstations and other campus food service areas.
  • Good vision with or without correction.
  • Sensory ability to taste and smell.
  • Good personal hygiene and compliance with clean-uniform and public-health standards.
  • Adherence to the department's sustainability initiatives.
  • Basic computer skills, including receiving and sending email.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the cooks and assume the duties of the Kitchen Assistant during their absences.
  • Prepare, cook, garnish, and present menu items according to dining service standards and recipes, including breakfast items, soups, entrees, meats, sauces, vegetables, salads, dressings, breads, desserts, meal alternatives, special diets, dietary accommodations, and display cooking.
  • Clean and sanitize dining service areas and equipment, including routine floor maintenance on each shift.
  • Support and maintain proper sanitation and recycling procedures.
  • Perform dining room coordinator duties as needed, including using the dining access system.
  • Assist with receiving by checking in products, inspecting, weighing or counting, and properly storing food and supplies.
  • Assist the chef in accurately inventorying storage areas.
  • Work with kitchen staff to assemble production records, transfers, and meal counts for data entry.
  • Communicate accurately, professionally, and promptly, including labeling and dating prepared foods.
  • Work cooperatively with the area manager, staff, and students to maintain an orderly and efficient operation.
  • Review department notices.
  • Use email and college computer access responsibly.
  • Attend departmental meetings and training workshops as requested.
  • Participate in preparation for and service of special events.
  • Complete required payroll and scheduling forms within deadlines.
  • Initiate teamwork, collaboration, and cooperation among coworkers.
Desired Qualifications
  • Culinary arts degree or equivalent training.
