Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Education, Child Development, Child Life, or a related field.
  • Completion of an internship under the supervision of a certified Child Life Specialist.
  • Eligibility for Professional Child Life Certification upon hire and certification from the Child Life Certification Commission as a Certified Child Life Specialist within 18 months of hire; at least two exam attempts are required within the first year of hire.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills and familiarity with computerized patient charting systems.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, diagnoses, tests, and procedures relevant to pediatric care.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to engage with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Commitment to providing compassionate and responsive customer service to patients and families.
  • Ability to assess patient needs and apply critical thinking to provide appropriate interventions.
  • Proficiency in interviewing, problem-solving, and providing critical support to pediatric patients and their families.
  • Ability to frequently stand and walk, occasionally lift objects weighing 20 pounds or less, and assist with lifting and moving patients.
  • Ability to attend to computer or CRT tasks, which may account for up to 40% of work time.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and assess a comprehensive Child Life Program that promotes the developmental well-being of children, adolescents, and their families; minimizes psychological trauma during medical treatments; and maintains normal living patterns.
  • Design and provide developmentally appropriate experiences that support the cognitive, emotional, and social growth of children and adolescents.
  • Assist with medical and psychosocial preparation for hospitalization and medical procedures, ensuring patients and families are informed and prepared.
  • Create and maintain a playroom and environment that fosters healthy play, growth, and development, including interactive materials such as bulletin boards.
  • Work with healthcare professionals to address the psychosocial needs of pediatric and adolescent patients and ensure comprehensive, coordinated care.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing with patients, families, and healthcare teams, tailoring communication to the understanding of different age groups and backgrounds.
  • Gather, document, and report data regarding patients' developmental and psychosocial status.
  • Support and guide students and volunteers involved in the Child Life Program through mentorship and oversight.
  • Coordinate services with the healthcare team to address patients' psychosocial and developmental needs and ensure continuity of care.
