Requirements
  • An associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science, or a related area, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Two years of technical experience in veterinary medicine, including at least two years of clinical mixed- or large-animal veterinary medical experience.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and billing entry.
  • Willingness and ability to work alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or on-call duty, sometimes with little advance notice.
  • Applicants are subject to a criminal history investigation and verification of credentials and other information required by institutional procedures.
Responsibilities
  • Observe and document PVAMU farm animals daily to identify current or potential health issues.
  • Perform and report examinations including body weight, temperature, pulse, respirations, and body condition score to professional staff as appropriate.
  • Assist veterinarians and professional staff with routine and emergency clinical cases, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia under direct veterinarian supervision.
  • Perform patient restraint; obtain and process laboratory samples; handle and dispense medications at the veterinarian's direction; and maintain electronic medical records.
  • Provide in-hospital treatments for sick patients, including injectable and oral medications and intravenous fluid therapy.
  • Keep patients clean, watered, and fed when indicated and directed by the veterinarian, and safely walk patients when necessary.
  • Prepare patients for surgery; support induction and monitoring of anesthetized patients under veterinarian direction; record vital parameters; and monitor patients during recovery.
  • Obtain patient weight and vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respirations, pain score, and body condition score, and record them in the electronic medical record.
  • Begin documenting patient visits by recording thorough patient histories in the electronic medical record.
  • Keep pharmacy and surgery-room environments neat and clean, and perform regular cleaning according to need and a predetermined maintenance schedule.
  • Schedule activities, relay test results to doctors, maintain and update inventory and patient records, and keep pharmacy, treatment, and surgery areas stocked.
  • Participate in research projects involving animal preparation, body condition scoring, estrous synchronization, semen collection and processing, and artificial insemination.
  • Participate in training new staff members and disseminating knowledge as required.
  • Participate in extension and educational programs for students, ranchers, and other customers.
  • Participate in college-wide events, activities, and committees, and perform other necessary duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • Four years of previous experience working in a veterinary practice.
  • Must possess exemplary interpersonal skills and be able to work in physically demanding environments around animals, dust, or hay.
  • Must show leadership, be self-motivated, able to multitask, take initiative, and actively contribute to the effective veterinary care of livestock.
  • Must be able to regularly lift heavy loads of approximately 50 pounds.
  • Must be familiar with cattle and goat behavior, common and proper methods of food-animal handling and restraint, particularly caprine and bovine handling, and proper medication injection sites.
  • General understanding of methods and equipment such as body condition scoring, anesthetic machines, fluid pumps, ultrasound, and hematology equipment.
  • Ability to provide quality customer service to internal customers.
  • Veterinary Technician Diploma with an active license at the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examination.
