Michael Burry scores 50-60% gain on Nvidia calls in under 24 hours, stays bearish on AI capex

Michael Burry thanked veteran tech journalist Tae Kim after Kim praised the investor for profiting from Nvidia and Microsoft calls placed ahead of earnings. Burry's Nvidia calls appreciated between 50% and 60% in less than a day, whilst his long-dated Microsoft calls benefited as the stock surged more than 15% after strong quarterly results. Burry bought December Nvidia calls with strikes in the mid-to-high $200s shortly before the chipmaker reported second-quarter results. He characterised the calls as protection for a larger bearish position, with Nvidia puts alone accounting for 3.5% to 4% of his portfolio. He sold half the Nvidia calls after locking in gains, saying they "did their job." Burry remains long-term bearish on AI capex, warning excessive investment could eventually cause "shocking reductions in earnings.

Billionaire Bill Ackman increases Microsoft stake by 10%, now third-largest position

Bill Ackman's Pershing Square Capital Management increased its Microsoft stake by nearly 10% in the second quarter, making it the fund's third-largest position at nearly 12% of the portfolio. The tech giant reported strong earnings in late July, with 18% revenue growth and 43% growth in its Azure cloud computing segment. Microsoft's share price has surged 30% since the end of June, following positive market reaction to the company not increasing its data centre spending guidance. The stock now trades at about 25 times forward earnings, up from below 20 times before the earnings announcement. Whilst Microsoft remains a solid hold, analysts suggest the recent rally has eliminated the bargain pricing that previously existed. Several other AI stocks currently trade at more attractive valuations.

Nadella's Microsoft pay jumps from $18M to $96.5M as shares surge 942% on cloud and AI bets

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's total compensation has surged from $18 million in 2015 to $96.5 million in fiscal 2025, making him one of the world's highest-paid chief executives. More than 95% of his pay is tied to performance stock units linked to Microsoft's share price, which has risen 942% since 2015. The pay increase reflects Microsoft's transformation under Nadella's leadership. After taking over in 2014, he pivoted the company towards cloud computing, particularly Azure, which recently surpassed $100 billion in revenue for fiscal 2026. This strategy boosted Microsoft's market capitalisation from $300 billion in 2014 to over $1 trillion by mid-2019. Microsoft's early investment in OpenAI and integration of AI into its enterprise software has further accelerated growth, pushing its market cap above $3.6 trillion.

Xbox's disc-to-digital program lets physical game owners claim digital copies

Xbox has announced a disc-to-digital program allowing players to claim digital entitlements for most Xbox One and Series X disc-based games. The initiative, testing with Xbox Insiders from 31 August, lets users insert a disc to unlock permanent digital access without needing the physical copy thereafter. Physical discs will continue functioning after claiming digital rights. However, each disc carries one revocable licence that transfers if the disc is resold or loaned. Digital entitlements enable features like Xbox Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming for supported titles. The program could prove crucial as Microsoft's rumoured Project Helix console may lack a disc drive, making digital conversion the only backward compatibility option. Publishers must opt in for compatibility, explaining why not all titles are supported initially.

Microsoft and Qcells expand solar partnership to power AI data centres without raising utility bills

Microsoft is expanding its partnership with solar panel manufacturer Qcells to power its growing data centre operations driven by AI infrastructure demands. Under the agreement, Microsoft would fund power needs whilst Qcells develops new capacity to deliver electricity to either Microsoft or local utilities serving communities near new data centres. The partnership, which began in 2023 with 2.5 gigawatts of solar panels, was expanded to 12 GW of solar modules in 2024. The companies are also exploring virtual power plants combining residential and commercial batteries to reduce peak demand and lower consumer energy bills. Microsoft is a signatory to the White House's Ratepayer Protection Pledge, committing to building new power supply for data centre expansion. The company reported a 25% rise in 2025 emissions from data centre growth in its latest sustainability report.
