About the job

Requirements
  • A BS in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 7 years developing microcontroller firmware for electromechanical devices in shipped products.
  • At least 2 years leading or managing firmware engineers.
  • A deep background in real-time controls, including implementing sensing, timing-critical control loops, diagnostics, and communication interfaces.
  • Proficiency in C for embedded targets and Python for tooling and analysis.
  • Experience with a real-time operating system and standard microcontroller interfaces, including SPI, I2C, UART, and CAN.
  • Working knowledge of electronics, including reading schematics, board bring-up, and using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
  • FMEA experience for electromechanical devices, with a track record of incorporating results into firmware design.
  • Demonstrated collaboration with hardware and manufacturing teams through design, integration, and production.
Responsibilities
  • Own firmware architecture and roadmap for deposition and etch tools and their components, including mass flow controllers, pumps, pressure controllers, valve manifolds, heaters, and gas delivery.
  • Design and implement real-time control algorithms for temperature regulation, valve sequencing, RF plasma sources, and other semiconductor process equipment.
  • Write and review production firmware in C and Rust, using Python for tooling and testing.
  • Lead FMEA for firmware and firmware-adjacent failure modes, design interlocks and watchdogs, and root-cause field and test failures.
  • Partner with electronic hardware engineering on board bring-up, schematic review, sensor and driver selection, and design-for-firmware.
  • Partner with the vacuum hardware team on control requirements, actuator characterization, and system integration.
  • Partner with the manufacturing team to enable hardware device testing and calibration.
  • Build and maintain hardware-in-the-loop and bench test infrastructure for firmware validation.
  • Uphold code and testing standards through feedback and code review.
  • Hire and mentor team members.
Desired Qualifications
  • Background in semiconductor equipment, vacuum systems, gas handling, or scientific instrumentation.
  • Experience with mass flow controllers, vacuum pumps, pressure control, or thermal control firmware.
  • Experience with functional or equipment safety practices, such as IEC 61508, SEMI S2, or similar.
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop test infrastructure and continuous integration for firmware.
  • Experience with Rust on embedded targets.
  • Experience taking a product from prototype through production.

About the company

Fab2 designs and sells miniaturized, fully integrated fabrication plants called “fab fabs” that include all necessary tooling built in-house for rapid prototyping and small-batch chip production. It is also building Studio, a browser-based collaborative EDA tool for chip layout, schematic, and simulation to create an end-to-end design-to-fabrication pipeline. The company differentiates itself by providing in-house manufactured equipment and a modular factory setup, enabling development cycles measured in hours rather than months and focusing on quick-turnaround prototyping. Fab2 aims to democratize chip creation by making smaller-scale fabrication accessible to researchers, hobbyists, and small teams.

What believers are saying

  • The September 9, 2026 $500M Series A gives Fab2 deep cash for expansion.
  • Austin filings show $3.9M warehouse renovations finishing February 2027, signaling active deployment.
  • Texas relocation concentrates hiring and manufacturing near cheaper space, permitting, and industrial policy support.

What critics are saying

  • September 2026's $3.7B valuation prices enormous execution; missed milestones crush follow-on financing.
  • Fab2 still lacks disclosed revenue, yields, customer volume, or shipped-fab counts as of September 2026.
  • Competing 300mm foundries and captive fabs can outspend Fab2 before its Texas buildout scales.

What makes Fab2 unique

  • Sam Zeloof and Jim Keller combine chipmaking hardware, fab automation, and Studio EDA.
  • Fab2's July 2026 rebrand centers a 'fab fab' that manufactures mini-fabs in-house.
  • Austin, Lockhart, and San Francisco sites create an integrated prototype-to-tooling loop.
