  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required, and the employee must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Completion of the learning program with an 80% passing score on the written and skills performance examination is required.
  • Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required; other resuscitation certifications may be required depending on the department.
  • The role requires prolonged standing and walking; lifting, positioning, pushing, and transferring patients; lifting supplies and equipment; and reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, lifting, pushing, and pulling 100 or more pounds.
  • The role involves regular exposure to blood-borne diseases, patients under varied circumstances, unpleasant elements, unpredictable situations, emergency care, irregular hours, and multiple competing demands.
Responsibilities
  • Carry out patients’ plans of care for physical needs under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
  • Provide bedside patient care using aseptic technique, medical terminology, and patient-care equipment.
  • Assist nurses and physicians with procedures and safely operate patient-care equipment.
  • Retrieve patient-care items, follow up on patient-care needs, and maintain supplies and equipment.
  • Complete unit clerical duties, including coordinating designated unit activities, transcribing orders, maintaining medical records, and serving as a unit receptionist.
  • Prepare rooms before admissions and after discharges and complete patients’ belongings lists during admission and transfer.
  • Provide prompt and courteous attention to patients, families, and visitors; respond to call lights; and perform purposeful rounding.
  • Perform service recovery activities and refer unusual problems to the Nurse Manager or designee.
  • Check meals after dietary trays are delivered, address late or incorrect trays, and feed or set up trays as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment by notifying the appropriate departments of housekeeping, maintenance, dietary, and other needs.
  • Serve as a resource for co-workers, patients and families, medical staff, and ancillary personnel.
  • Apply restraints correctly, monitor circulation, skin integrity, and breathing, reposition patients, and provide range-of-motion exercises, skin care, toileting, and socialization opportunities.
  • Operate cardiac monitors, including switches, alarms, standby functions, strip acquisition, and lead placement.
  • Perform approved point-of-care testing; obtain vital signs; and measure abdominal girth, patient weight, intake, and output.
  • Apply pneumatic air stockings and TED hose and ambulate, turn, and position patients.
  • Assist with incentive spirometry and coughing or deep-breathing exercises; set up oxygen therapy; monitor pulse oximetry; perform tracheostomy care and oral or stable-patient tracheal suctioning.
  • Place patients on specialty beds, perform sterile and clean dressing changes, and provide pin-site care after Registered Nurse assessment.
  • Administer enemas, perform straight catheterization, and provide catheter care.
  • Provide hygiene and grooming, mouth care, fresh water, perineal care, and toileting.
  • Collect urine, sputum, blood, and stool specimens, including venipuncture and specimens from indwelling catheters.
  • Answer unit phones, provide directions, notify physicians and nursing staff of arrivals, receive articles, and manage pneumatic-tube carriers.
  • Prepare daily worksheets, confirm appointments, verify census information, and update records.
  • Notify Admitting of transfers, discharges, admissions, room changes, and deaths and complete related paperwork.
  • Inform staff and charge nurses of unit activities, assist with specimen labels and requisitions, report critical laboratory values, and complete pre-operative checklist documentation.
  • Complete admission data screens, assist with transfer and discharge paperwork, and manage medication movement.
  • Give change-of-shift reports, check charts and physician orders, enter and transcribe orders, place orders in the pharmacy bin, and use backup systems during computer downtime.
  • Initiate and assemble charts, maintain chart order, coordinate retrieval and return of old charts, complete medical-record checklists, and ensure records are sent to Medical Records.
  • Post allergy and isolation cards in charts and complete the secretarial portion of death summaries.
  • Follow safety and infection-control policies, practice standard precautions, dispose of hazardous waste, maintain a safe and therapeutic environment, report risk-management concerns, and complete mandatory training and competency requirements.
  • Obtain reports from Registered Nurses, report changes in patient condition and patient concerns, document care, identify problems, suggest solutions, and work through appropriate lines of authority.
  • Empty soiled-linen containers and work in a consistently alert and safe manner.
  • Provide age-appropriate care, assess and interpret age-specific data, communicate with patients and families, and involve families or significant others in care decisions.
  • Provide specialized restraint care, follow pain-management plans, and recognize and report possible abuse or neglect.
  • Participate in staff meetings, mandatory in-services, educational programs, self-performance evaluation, nursing-unit goals, performance-improvement activities, data collection, research activities, and action-plan implementation.
  • Follow infection-control policies, including isolation, hand hygiene, dressing changes, suctioning precautions, vaccination requirements, and safe practices during crises and patient transport.
  • Contribute positively to the patient-care team, participate in unit and hospital committees, maintain thorough documentation, round purposefully, model practice excellence to new employees, and complete licensure, certification, and mandatory requirements.
  • Maintain equipment and clean, organized work areas; provide hand-off reports; communicate patient concerns; mentor new employees; resolve conflicts constructively; and schedule shifts to meet unit needs.
  • Introduce self to patients and families, explain procedures and care plans, answer patient requests promptly, protect privacy and modesty, and keep patients and families informed.
