Requirements
  • Completion of a National Board for Respiratory Care-approved and accredited program and one year of clinical practice experience under medical direction.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification.
  • Current state licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
  • Availability to travel to and temporarily reside in locations outside the therapist's primary home.
Responsibilities
  • Travel nationwide for 13-week assignments and work in various settings.
  • Perform respiratory care procedures under general supervision and medical direction within departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assess and manage residents and facilitate care and discharge planning as required.
  • Assess residents' conditions, administer prescribed respiratory therapy and aerosolized medications, and monitor and record responses and adverse reactions.
  • Provide in-service training to residents, family members, and facility staff.
  • Initiate, monitor, and maintain life-support systems in the skilled nursing facility.
  • Perform airway care and maintenance, manage artificial ventilator status, and maintain and troubleshoot mechanical ventilators.
  • Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including bag ventilation and closed-chest massage.
  • Initiate, monitor, and document respiratory care modalities.
  • Assess residents' cardiopulmonary status using physical assessment, history taking, laboratory findings, chest radiological studies, pulmonary function testing, and professional judgment to formulate physician-ordered respiratory care plans.
  • Verify physician orders and resident charts for completeness and relevant precautions before treatment.
  • Observe and chart vital respiratory findings, general appearance, breathing exercises, and resident teaching and training; notify the supervisor of new starts and discontinued residents.
  • Administer technical respiratory care procedures, dispense medications, adjust therapy devices, monitor treatment responses, and communicate pertinent information to nurses.
  • Inspect, test, clean, reassemble, maintain, and properly dispose of respiratory equipment and supplies.
  • Initiate, administer, evaluate, and document physician-ordered therapy modalities, including intermittent positive-pressure breathing, handheld nebulizers, chest physical therapy, percussion, vibration, breathing and cough retraining, deep tracheal suctioning, incentive spirometry, and sputum induction.
  • Recognize adverse reactions to therapy modalities and take appropriate action.
  • Document all resident care services in the medical record.
  • Accept and transcribe verbal orders related to respiratory care procedures.
  • Set up, maintain, and record log entries for oxygen and respiratory supplies and equipment.
  • Instruct residents and family members on the rationale and methodology of respiratory procedures.
  • Attend educational programs and review professional journals to maintain technical skills and clinical competencies.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary resident rounds and conferences to plan and evaluate resident care.
  • Participate in quality-assurance data collection as assigned.
  • Deliver rehabilitation services efficiently while following care plans, schedules, and documentation requirements.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and perform quality-control, preventive-maintenance, and calibration tasks for diagnostic equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
