Requirements
  • Three to five years of experience in UAV, robotics, aerospace, or electromechanical systems testing.
  • Strong mechatronics intuition, with the ability to debug mechanical, electrical, and software-integration issues at a system level.
  • Experience designing structured experiments and test plans.
  • Hands-on experience instrumenting complex systems and validating data quality.
  • Ability to define requirements and prototype fixtures.
  • Competence analyzing logs, telemetry, and multi-domain performance data.
  • Comfort working in laboratory and field environments, including variable outdoor conditions.
  • Basic computer-aided design proficiency.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and own system-level test plans for ground and flight testing, with clear objectives, sequences, and success criteria.
  • Design and maintain test infrastructure and instrumentation so vehicles and test setups capture high-quality, actionable data.
  • Provide technical oversight of test execution, validate readiness, guide pilots and operators, and ensure procedural rigor.
  • Analyze telemetry, logs, and performance data to characterize system behavior, identify root causes, and inform engineering decisions.
  • Drive continuous improvement of test methods, documentation, workflows, and tools.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with hardware and software teams to align test activities with development needs and translate findings into design actions.
Desired Qualifications
  • Exposure to PX4, ArduPilot, ROS, or similar robotics frameworks.
  • Familiarity with reliability, accelerated life, or environmental testing.
  • FAA Part 107 certification or willingness to obtain it.
  • Passion for UAVs and aviation.

Aspen becomes first US fire agency to deploy autonomous fire-suppression drones

Seneca, a Bay Area startup, has signed its first customer for wildfire-fighting drones with Colorado's Aspen Fire Protection District. The fleet of five drones will deploy this summer, making Aspen the first US wildfire agency to adopt this technology. Each drone carries enough water to create over 50 gallons of foam suppressant and can operate within a three-to-five-mile range, designed to reach and extinguish small fires before ground crews arrive. The drones complement AI cameras that detect fires but can't guarantee rapid human response, particularly for remote blazes. Founded in 2024, Seneca is amongst several firetech companies addressing increasingly destructive wildfires. Aspen Fire Chief Jake Andersen views the drones as an early suppression resource that could eventually operate from permanent bases around the region.
