Requirements
  • Strategic visionary with the ability to combine user needs, business priorities, and sharp product and design sense into an inspirational vision that articulates the future and enables the organization to work backward with clarity and strategic focus.
  • Craft and experience obsessed, caring deeply about how things feel, not just how they function, with attention to transitions, motion, and accessibility, and a portfolio of shipped consumer product work across web and native mobile demonstrating high-quality craft and delight.
  • Systems thinker who sees the full picture, considers how a single interaction fits into a broader experience, how Registry flows connect across the Babylist ecosystem, and how the design system enables all of it.
  • AI-native practitioner-leader who uses AI tools to prototype, explore, and iterate at speed, stays close to the craft, reviews work in depth, and can build when building is the fastest path to impact, with real craft knowledge and hands-on understanding of what it takes to ship.
  • Human-and-data-centered practitioner who leverages generative and evaluative research to unlock actionable insights, brings concrete qualitative and quantitative evidence into design decisions, and communicates clear, persuasive design rationale concisely.
  • Industry-aware and pattern fluent, staying current with modern product design, knowing interaction patterns, design system conventions, and digital product best practices, and knowing when to apply or evolve them.
  • Clear and critical thinker who synthesizes competing inputs, stress-tests assumptions, communicates viewpoints with extreme clarity, does not equate collaboration with consensus, and surfaces misalignment early to accelerate and de-risk decisions.
  • Outcome owner who instruments work, tracks whether it moves the right metrics, and holds self and team accountable for meaningful results.
  • People leader who hires, develops, retains, inspires, and manages a team of designers, provides direct feedback, and creates an environment for designers to do their best work.
  • Operational leader who builds and maintains systems, rituals, and processes that enable the team to execute with quality and consistency, balancing enablement and burden of processes.
  • Adaptable to change, selects for change, works across team boundaries without waiting for permission, is humble and biased toward action, and brings curiosity to ambiguity.
  • Excited about the AI transformation and seeks to shape an AI-first design organization at Babylist and as a category.
Responsibilities
  • Own the Registry experience end-to-end across the full Babylist cross-platform ecosystem, accountable for the quality and outcomes of everything the design team ships.
  • Lead with equal parts vision, strategy, and execution, connecting design vision to company strategy and business goals; articulate where the Registry experience should be in 12-18 months and define the sequence of bets with PM and Engineering.
  • Define excellence by setting the bar for quality, delight, and product excellence, demonstrating and teaching the organization what great looks like, and favoring learning over perfection.
  • Stay deeply connected to users by planning and executing research to ground design decisions in how families actually behave, bringing hands-on craft knowledge and understanding of what it takes to ship.
  • Operate with agency by biasing toward action, creating the conditions for success, not waiting for permission, and holding yourself and others accountable.
  • Serve as a model for AI-first Design at Babylist by using AI-native workflows in your work, shipping things yourself, and helping define the rituals and practices adopted by the rest of the function.
  • Scale design democratization by building AI-enabled workflows that bring non-designers into design tools, acting as a consultant and quality bar rather than a gatekeeper.
  • Build a high-performing design team by hiring, developing, retaining, and organizing designers, creating a growth-mindset environment, managing performance, and investing in career growth.
  • Multiply your team by partnering with engineering, product management, analytics, marketing, and merchandising leaders as co-builders to move high-impact work forward, bringing tighter problem framing, sharper user insight, and effective prototypes.
  • Contribute to the shape of the Consumer Tech organization by working with the VP of Product Design and other leaders to evolve operating model, hiring standards, and craft standards as the team transitions.

Babylist is a universal baby registry platform that lets expecting and new parents add baby products from multiple stores into one registry, rather than being tied to a single retailer. Parents create a registry, browse items from partner retailers like Amazon, Target, and Etsy, and add products from different stores in one place, aided by expert-vetted guides, an interactive checklist, and curated kits. It differentiates itself by enabling cross-store registries with practical planning tools and curated offerings, supported by affiliate commissions, exclusive kits, and advertising partnerships. The goal is to simplify shopping and planning for new parents, helping them feel confident about having everything they need while driving ongoing engagement for the business.

What believers are saying

  • Babylist reported $750 million 2025 revenue, 45% growth, and eight profitable years.
  • Babylist Health approaches $100 million revenue, diversifying beyond registries into higher-frequency services.
  • Early Investor and the SoHo showroom expand wallet share just as 40% of first-time parents already use Babylist.

What critics are saying

  • Amazon and Target keep stealing checkout with discounts, fast shipping, and captive ecosystems.
  • Babylist's universal registry moat erodes if MyRegistry, GiftX, or retailer-native tools improve.
  • New York showroom expansion and $1 billion revenue targets raise execution risk if traffic disappoints.

What makes Babylist unique

  • Babylist owns universal baby registry behavior across stores, unlike Amazon and Target registries.
  • Babylist combines registry, Babylist Health, Money, and Early Investor into one parent ecosystem.
  • Natalie Gordon and Jenn Hyman signal product-led, founder-driven execution through the September 2026 handoff.

Rent the Runway founder Jenn Hyman to lead $1B Babylist as CEO in rare founder-to-founder handoff

Jenn Hyman, who left Rent the Runway in May, will become CEO of baby registry service Babylist on 9 September. Babylist founder Natalie Gordon will transition to executive chair. The move represents a rare founder-to-founder CEO handoff. Gordon has built Babylist for 15 years, whilst Hyman spent 18 years at Rent the Runway, taking it public in 2021. Babylist is on track for $1 billion in revenue this year and approaching an IPO — roughly three times Rent the Runway's $330 million revenue last year. Gordon began considering stepping aside 18 months ago, before one of the company's strongest years. The pair met last autumn, and Hyman joined Babylist's board in January. Hyman will adapt from fashion's in-person culture to Babylist's fully remote workforce of 300 employees.
