About the job

Requirements
  • An advanced degree and 4+ years of experience in engineering, purchasing, contract negotiation, material or production planning, operations or supply chain management, material cost control, or master production scheduling; or a bachelor's degree and 6+ years of experience in one or more of those areas; or 10+ years of experience in one or more of those areas.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed to support production, launch, and critical supplier issues.
  • Willingness to travel to suppliers, other company sites, and source-inspection or recovery trips.
  • Working knowledge of enterprise resource planning or material requirements planning purchasing systems, such as SAP, Oracle, or equivalent.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute global supply agreements and sourcing strategy for an assigned Falcon or Dragon commodity, ensuring partners are tooled, capacitated, and ready for prototype, ramp, and rate production.
  • Own continuity of supply from concept through end of life, including coverage, need dates, dual sourcing, sub-tier risk, and escalation when delivery or quality is at risk.
  • Lead request for information, request for proposal, and request for quotation processes with engineering, supplier development, quality, and planning; evaluate bids, present the sourcing recommendation, and close the award.
  • Negotiate price, payment terms, capacity, lead time, and contract vehicles; place and manage purchase orders that maintain cost targets without compromising delivery or quality.
  • Build should-cost and competitive-quote discipline; present value propositions to company management on contract awards, cost reviews, cost-reduction strategy, and critical supply issues.
  • Develop commodity expertise in market trends, process capability, cost drivers, and supplier technical limits, and use it to inform design for manufacturability and source selection.
  • Build a commodity and technology roadmap aligned to future Falcon and Dragon rate and design changes; identify suppliers whose process portfolios match that roadmap.
  • Define and report key performance indicators for coverage, on-time delivery, price, capacity, and supply risk, and drive internal and external process improvements based on the data.
  • Serve as the liaison between supply chain and engineering for supplier down-selection on new product introduction while holding or improving cost targets.
  • Develop and maintain supplier partnerships, secure the right resources on company programs, and hold vendors to delivery, quality, and commercial commitments.
  • Issue and manage purchase orders, resolve invoices, and close the loop on quality and cost so tactical execution does not leak while strategy is being built.
  • Prepare sourcing recommendations for leadership approval, covering spend, cost impact, need date, risk, and technical alignment, and own the result after award.
  • Guide junior sourcing, buying, or planning teammates; take ownership of team effort on cost and sourcing strategy for existing platforms and new products.
  • Conduct all activities with the highest level of integrity and in accordance with company procurement policy and procedure.
  • Work hands-on on the production floor, at suppliers, and in data, not only in meetings.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience managing a domestic and international production supply base through rate, not only new-product introduction or one-off buys.
  • Deep commodity experience in technical procurement, such as precision machining, raw material, tube bending, valves, mechanisms, welding, outside processing, or equivalent aerospace or automotive hardware.
  • A proven track record of owning a commodity book, negotiating preferred pricing, and delivering cost, coverage, and delivery results.
  • Individual negotiation skills and the ability to influence engineering, suppliers, and leadership.
  • Experience running request-for-X processes and converting them into long-term agreements or volume buys.
  • Experience planning purchases of commodity hardware and third-party services with product development, quality, finance, and production.
  • Advanced Excel skills and comfort building analysis, not only reviewing it.
  • Written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to present a cost and risk story to senior leadership and answer follow-up questions.
  • Experience mentoring junior sourcing, buying, or planning teammates.
  • Experience in aerospace, aviation, automotive, or other high-rate manufacturing supply chain.

About the company

SpaceX builds and launches reusable rockets and spacecraft for NASA, the military, and companies, and it runs Starlink, a satellite internet service for homes and businesses. In 2020, its Dragon capsule became the first privately built spacecraft to carry astronauts to the International Space Station. Its Falcon 9 rocket lands its first stage so the booster can fly again, which cuts launch costs, while Starlink beams internet from low-orbit satellites to small dishes for a monthly fee. SpaceX also owns xAI, maker of the Grok chatbot and owner of the social network X, and is building Starship, a fully reusable rocket meant to carry people to the Moon and Mars. Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, and it is based in Starbase, Texas.
